Kodak Canada Heritage Collection and Museum records

Sub-series consists of records pertaining to the operation of the Kodak Canada Heritage Collection and Museum. The Kodak Canada Heritage Collection was instigated in the early 1990s as a continuation of the Kodak Canada Archives, intended to document and display Kodak Canada's corporate history. The archival was never formally absorbed by the museum and was housed in a room adjacent to the museum exhibition space in building 9 of Kodak Heights, in a series of 5 filing cabinets. The Heritage Collection operated under the curatorship of Bonnie Chapman, an employee in Kodak's Corporate Communications department. A request was made in 1996 to establish a permanent exhibition space for the collection in building 9 of Kodak Heights. In 1998, Kodak Canada collaborated with consultants from the Royal Ontario Museum to conceptualize and install the exhibition that was housed in this permanent space. The Museum officially opened in 1999 and was closed as part of the dissolution of Kodak Canada's manufacturing operations in the early 2000s. Many of the records and objects contained in the overall Kodak Canada Corporate Archives and Heritage Collection housed at Ryerson University were originally part of this Museum collection. Records in this sub-series include: display labels and captions; notes and correspondence related to museum events; records pertaining to Kodak's partnership with the ROM; loan agreements and calls for donations; reference material; records and inventories of artifacts; and other ephemera. There was significant crossover between the activities of the Kodak Heritage Collection and Museum and those of the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs department, particularly surrounding Kodak Canada's centennial celebrations in 1999.

Also included is a photocopied letter to then-general manager of Canadian Kodak, John G. Palmer, from an officer of the 2nd Battalion regarding the transfer of J[ames] W. Spence from England to France. Spence was an active executive member of Canadian Kodak Co., Ltd., eventually acting as chairman of the board from 1955-1957.

Media clippings and transcriptions related to the employee strike of 1974

File includes compiled newspaper clippings and transcriptions of radio and television broadcasts related to the Kodak employee strike of 1974. The strike was the first in Kodak Canada's history and was instigated by members of the International Chemical Workers Union (ICWU), which had organized at Kodak Canada thirty years earlier. The strike lasted 7 weeks and affected over 1000 employees. The clippings, divided into weeks of the strike, were likely compiled by A. A. Bolté, Kodak Canada's media spokesperson at the time.

Most documents provide general corporate information, but some cover more specific topics, including the Ryerson Chair in Photography, Kodak's Toronto Expansion Program, the history of the Kodak camera, Kodak's offices in Quebec, Ottawa, and Edmonton, and the history of the Kodak Heights Power House (building #1). Many of the histories were written by Mel Rubinstein, Company Information Specialist, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs. Corporate histories in this file appear to have been written retroactively and can thus be differentiated from Kodak Canada's "Corporate History Notes," which were written on an ongoing basis and provided day-to-day accounts of the company's life.

Much of the file consists of Kodak Canada's Talking Points/Point de Vue initiative, an internal communication system designed to quickly disseminate information throughout the organization. File also includes notes for regional visits, notes and transpariencies for an Image Check meeting from January 20, 1995 and an SGM IS managers meeting from April 26, 1995, and other materials. Topics include Kodak Canada's history, organization, strategic vision, quality policy, customer satisfaction measures, operating efficiency, and revenues.

File contains packaging for Kodak photofinishing--including envelopes for mail-order processing and developed negatives--from roughly 1907 to 1997. File also includes product packaging and instructions for Canadian Kodak's Azo developing paper from between 1909 and 1911. Azo is a silver chloride contact printing paper originally produced by Photo Materials Company of Rochester, NY. This latter company was purchased by Kodak in 1898, which then began producing and distributing Azo paper under its own name.

Most records were created by Canadian firm Baker Lovick Advertising between 1975 and 1977, but file also contains advertising copy from J. Walter Thompson of New York and promotional material from Toronto-based firm Rostrum International Inc. soliciting business from Kodak for its digital communications services.

Kodak Canada's Communications department changed its name to Corporate Communications between 1982 and 1986, then changed it again to Corporate communications and Public Affairs in 1988. Records include notes, correspondence, advertising mock-ups and clippings, press releases and press kits, communications-related invoices, drafts of press releases, articles, and advertising copy, and other ephemera. Records pertain to the creation of advertising and publicity, event planning, community engagement, and corporate sponsorship. There was significant crossover between the activities and personnel of the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs department and those of the Kodak Heritage Collection and Museum, particularly surrounding Kodak Canada's centennial celebrations in 1999.
