Convocation hoods

Twelve convocation hoods - 3 with red ribbon, 3 with light blue ribbon, 3 with dark blue ribbon, and 3 with gold braid. The ribbon represented the various degrees being granted. Nursing, Social Work and Bachelor of Applied Arts graduates wore the hood with the light blue ribbon; Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Technology graduates wore hoods with red ribbon; and Business Management wore the hood with the dark blue ribbon. There is no record of which program used the hood with the gold braid. New hoods that are black with blue, white and gold striping were introduced in 1994.

Education fair

This is Ryerson - Welcome to Ryerson publication

A few color negatives from the cover of the "This is Ryerson" and "Explore Ryerson" (1981-1988). The cover booklet for the Faculty of Community Services (summer 1987) "This is Ryerson 1987/88" is included. An "Explore Ryerson" poster negative (1983) , a picture of a red stop sign and red apple can be found also in this file. There are also other negatives from the Ryerson Folder (1981).

Energy Centre

1976-1978 The Energy Seminar (Energy Centre) -- 1979 Harbourfront Energy Exposition, Alastair Gillespie (Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources and Ken Burkhardt (Ryerson Centre) -- 1980 Canadian Energy Exposition, March 15-22, 1980.
Ontario Science Centre. Ken Burkhardt explains the operation of the K-cycle engine, a Canadian invention originating in Winnipeg -- May 1981 Festival of Energy, Canadian Energy Exposition, entertainers Michael Ross and Sandy pantomine an impatient driver, the annoyance he/she creates and the energy wasted, Sherwood Hume, Milton, Ontario and his 1913 Saywer and Massey steam engine, students and teachers examining energy projects exhibits in the gym and also students enjoying energy games at the festival.

Urban and Regional Planning

Photos of Urban and Regional Planning students (1981) at work, working on projects in the planning laboratory. Also a picture of the Urban Planning Collection on the 8th floor of the library, students using the sources that are available. There is also a picture taken for the '86 brochure in front of old city hall (downtown Toronto).

Theatre - technical production

Several black and white photographs of students preparing behind the scenes for a show. Illustrating how to hang and focus on theatre lights, audio operator mixing sound effects, prop mistress and set designer discussing props, wardrobe and costume fitting, and all these technical attributes for a theatre production.

Theatre - dance

In this file there is a black and white photo of Ryerson Dances 1990, Judith Miller, choreographer. There is also a photo of theatre students in costume folk dancing. Folk dance and folklore prepares students to teach the dance form to children of all ages. The art of dance is taken very seriously amongst these students, as you see the hard work , preparation and attention to detail that goes into every dance move.

Survey Engineering

Black and white photos taken of students in the Survey Engineering program (1981). Surveying offers students a balance of indoor and outdoor work activity, also concentrating on small class size guarantees each student individual attention. Many students get the opportunity to have hands-on experience with up-to-date survey equipment and procedures which prepares them for active role in the survey industry. Survey Camp is a unique two -week practical course held in a rural setting. Other photos give a birds eye view of students participating in projects and trying out new digital instruments and equipment.

Social Work

Many photos showing and preparing students in the field of Social Work the different challenges associated with the subject area. Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering Technology (1981) - photos of students measuring and cutting forces in a Machine lab, welding metal and testing for strength. Group discussions were also included in the drafting room. Under faculty supervision students are given the guidance of testing the characteristics of various materials. The lab was the classroom where teaching and learning was a "hands on" experience.

Hospitality and Tourism Management

A photo of Marilyn Barker, Co-ordinator of Ryerson's Hospitality Management Program (1985). From 1980 -82 photos of students in the program. Instructors explaining different concepts of the program and preparing students for the outside world of this industry.

Graphic Communications Management

Many changes took place during 1979-1980 with the Faculty of Graphic Communications Management and students in this subject area were learning the many resources that are available to help Graphic Arts Managers establish high quality standards. Precison colour matching for example is mage possible by the densitometer. Also leading-edge technology had transformed the operation and capabilities of modern typsetting systems. Technologically sophisticated euipment such as the electric colour scanner (picture) has made graphic arts processes faster, cheaper, and more controllable, while enhancing the overall quality of the product. Visual and machine-aided examination of press proofs are part of the process of ensuring that printing specifications are met.

Food, Nutrition, Consumer, and Family Studies

Many photos of FNCFS during the period 1979-1980. A student explains how a caliper is used to perform a skin-fold test. Also the Chemistry labs introduce students to the composition and preservation of foods, food regulations and sanitation. FNCFS team develops test data, while as part of their consumer testing course, students analyse paint coverage and durability.

Fashion

Different photos from fashion shows that the fashion department presented (1975-1985). Included are photographs from "No Respect" (1985).

Environmental Health

Several photos of students analysing food quality in the lab, checking the food storage facilities for temperature, cleanliness and correct storage procedures, checking large scale kitchen equipment. Also a photo of students taking the readings at the Ryerson swimming pool and examining specimens. Instructors in Environmental Health department requires a high level knowledge of the subject area when explaining gas chlorination with water quality treatment. Students are also encouraged to present seminars and hands on experiments

Electrical Engineering

There were many experiments that students were involved in, from the Department of Electrical Engineering (1981). Some of the research was measuring the frequency and amplitude of sound levels, or conducting microwave experiments in a shielded room, or analyzing a problem in microwave communication. Instructors displayed a 'hands on" approach to the explanation to these many experiments.

Early Childhood Education

Many photos of the Early Childhood Daycare Center. Students interacting with the children as well as teachers. Play time and socializing are the two important themes in these two folders(1981-1987).

Continuing Education - miscellaneous (book 4)

Several photos of students in the Secretarial and Administrative Studies program using a word processor and also using typewriters. Two students in the Nursing program practicing on a dummy. There are also photos of an instructor from Math and Physics teaching, an Electronics and Radio instructor and also a journalism and marketing/management class in progress. Film and photography, Graphic Arts and Computer Science students involved in their subject area. Theatre students showing the exact detail of makeup preparation and a tool design class in progress.

Continuing Education - miscellaneous (book 3)

Black and white photos of the campus and downtown. Many landmarks and buildings are identified. A photo of city hall, the facade of the old normal school, aerial photo of the "quad", the clock and 297 Victoria St. CJRT FM/91.1. Just to name a few of the interesting shots.

Photos of Continuing Education students during registration and when classes are in session. These students come from many different personal and professional backgrounds, but they share the desire to participate in adult learning opportunities (written in the back of one of the photos).

Computer Science

Applied Computer Science 1984 -1986. Black and white photos of students interacting with instructors and technology. In one photo students are busy programming mathematical algorithms into the software and analyzing the interrelationship of the image produced. Examples of how they protected (as a security function) the keyboards with a lock and key.

Civil Engineering

Two file folders of photographs of civil engineering students. Several photos showing students experimenting with different projects from surveying, to students producing a topographic map via instrumentation, students using a computer and stereo plotter in a map-making process and students working on a concrete design project or a statistical project for research.

Chemistry and Biology

The one color photo is a general view of the Absorption Tower, top of the Saturation Tower and collection device. Miscellaneous photos of students in the chemistry and biology lab. A photo of Dr. Robert Miller, Director of Technical Affairs, Ortho Pharmaceutical Ltd. Barbara Zymiak is using a pilot plant scale spray dryer to investigate the conditions for drying coffee. , David Grice using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer to estimate metal ions, Renee Cormier is using a microtone to cut thin sections of root tips and the team of Laboratory Science analyses various methods of measuring the physical properties of chemical processes, these photos were taken in the early 80's. A photo that appeared in Ryerson Engineering News was photos of Phil Renouf, John White, Doug Spartks and Ted Wisz (Dean of Technology).

Centre for the Study of Advanced Technology (CATE)

Photos of the old CATE facility (1985) and also construction of the new CATE facility. A $80,000 robot which will be used in a robotics course taught by Andrew Nemeth is seen discussing with a student (Chris Kulpa) how it should be programmed. Mechanical Engineering professor Andrew Nemeth, also demonstrates the robot to the National Research Council field representatives. President Brian Segal explains the operation of the ASEA 1000 Robot at a tour of Ryerson's new $12.5 million Centre of Advanced Technology Education (CATE), following official opening ceremonies on Nov.5/85. Flora Macdonald, then Minister of Employment and Immigration addressing the official opening of the Centre for Technology Education. Former managing director of CATE, Ike Goodfellow on secondment from IBM, watches Electrical Technologist Jeff Van Zuylen working with an opto-electronic measuring device.
