History

James Elgin Wetherell was born September 20, 1851 in Port Dalhousie, Ontario. In 1853 the family moved to Newmarket, Ontario and he attended high school there. He attended University College at the University of Toronto. He graduated in 1877 with a B. A. In 1878 he married Rebecca Randle Nason. After graduation he taught Latin for two years at the Canadian Literary Institute in Woodstock, Ontario, was head master of St. Mary's Collegiate Institute from 1879-1883, and became principal at the Strathroy Grammar School in 1883 holding that position until 1906. Between 1906-1917 he became one of two provincial high school inspectors, and between 1917-1924 he became the general editor of textbooks for the Province.
