Newmarch was a grade 13 student in Toronto who attended the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute picnic at Hanlon's Point on the Toronto Island on 5 Sept.. 1984. He apparently consumed alcoholic beverages there and on the return by ferry to the mainland died in an accident. Subsequent to this incident, the Board of Governors requested the preparation of a review issued in May 1985 entitled Alcohol and Ryerson: A Review, authored by Gail M. Scott and Ron Taber.
