Biographical history

Very little historical information has been written on the distance education function at Ryerson University. What is known is that distance education was a unit within the Continuing Education Division and has remained so to this day. Based on the dates of the series of distance education calendars in the Archives, it would appear that the distance education program may have been started in the mid-1960s. Also, judging by the lack of records in the Distance Education archival records group for the 1980s and 1990s, the extent of this program's activity at Ryerson during that period is unclear; it is possible that distance education was mainly the domain of Open College (see Records Group No. 7). In February, 2001, it was decided to transfer the Distance Education records in the Archives Collection from the Continuing Education Group in order to form a new Distance Education Group. See Open College Group History (No.7) for details regarding the sale/transfer of Open College from CJRT-FM to Ryerson, under the Continuing Education Division's Distance Education Unit. As of January 22, 2001, the date of the sale agreement, the Open College Records Group in the Archives Collection was closed and new records pertaining to Open College were arranged in the renamed DistanceEd/OpenColl Records Group. In the Spring of 2003, the name Open College was dropped in favour of Distance Education. (Minutes, Library Council, 26 Mar 03)
