Biographical history
Michael Finn has been an adjunct professor of French in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Ryerson since 2009. He received his BA and MA at the University of Toronto and his PhD at Harvard. His research focused largely on the novelist Marcel Proust until 1999 when he published Proust, the Body and Literary Form (Cambridge University Press). He then became interested in the interaction between medicine and literature especially in the decadent period in France and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in general. His latest work in this area discusses an early feminist, Rachilde (Marguerite Vallette-Eymery). It is titled Hysteria, Hypnosis, the Spirits and Pornography: Fin-de-Siècle Cultural Discourses in the Decadent Rachilde. He has also written widely on the representation of pathologized sexuality in French fin-de-siècle fiction. He is currently completing a book on figures of the unconscious in the works of a number of French writers, including Flaubert, Maupassant and Proust.
