Scope and content

Glass slide, handpainted over B&W slide. No wood frame. Black frame with gold letters "Made by Joseph Hawkes New York City." Slide is numbered 21 in the series. Black paper around glass edges. Heavily painted. Image is of an older man with white hair sitting at a table, with a dog standing on its hind legs, its front paws on the man's lap. In the BRC there's the numbers 99-218 printed on slide itself. More research shows that Joseph Hawkes worked in New York City and Brooklyn in the late 19th century, and he hand coloured slides. "He worked with the Brooklyn Museum's curator of fine arts, William Henry Goodyear, to reproduce images of archaeological and architectural sites in Europe as well as images of the Paris Exposition."
