Sketch of interior of Cornelius Vanderbilt House

Item is a sketch of the interior of a room with furnishings, made with ink on glassine paper. Inscriptions read: "Geo. S & Polley & W. Pub. Boston" "Interior Cornelius Vanderbilts Residence". The mansion was located on 1 West 57th Street in New York City and was built in 1883. Cornelius Vaderbilt II was an heir, socialite and businessman. The house was sold at the beginning of the First World War for seven million dollars.

Empty photograph envelopes

Various photograph envelopes from Kodak in Montreal QC, Gurds Sports Hobbies in London ON, and Tamblyn Tel-Vision Prints in Toronto. Advertisements for Verichrome Safety film on Kodak envelopes. One envelope contains two prints of A.T. Orr, one with him and a group of friends, the other holding game after hunting.

Blue leather album with an embossed gold flower and the title "Snapshots" on cover. Inside, brown card pages have inserts for photographs. Mostly filled with pictures of men, women and children outdoors. Last image is missing.

Cream card with photograph of an engraving of an old woman in a rocking chair holding her hand through a hole in a pair of trousers while a young boy, about 5 years old, leans against the chair in only his shirt and waistcoat. There is a small white dog at his feet, and the angle of the window gives the appearance of an attic. At the bottome edge, in purple letterpress, "HIS ONLY PAIR." On verso, handwritten in pencil, "3-".

Dick Whittington

Magic lantern used to project this type of circular slide was of German design, and was available c.1850. Magic lantern slides were popular in the 1890s. This design was for domestic use, and the slide was illuminated by an oil lamp,and projected a circular image. The slides, often hand coloured, were often mounted six to a small disk. This one in particular has eight hand coloured images. It tells the story of Dick Whittington, and English folktale, the title is written on the slide in three languages, English, French and German (Gesetzlich Geschutzt). It is the story of a young man who makes his fortune in London, with his cat.

The rat-catcher of Hameln

Magic lantern used to project this type of circular slide was of German design, and was available c.1850. Magic lantern slides were popular in the 1890s. This design was for domestic use, and the slide was illuminated by an oil lamp,and projected a circular image. The slides, often hand coloured, were often mounted six to a small disk. This one in particular has eight hand coloured images. It tells the story of the pied piper or the rat-catcher of Hameln, a town in Germany, who comes into a small village and leads the rats away, only to return when he receives no payment, to lead the children away. The title is written on the slide in three languages, English, French (Le preneur de rats de Hameln) and German (Der rattenfanger v. Hameln)

Small cardboard slide viewer, known as a "Gedescope", with lens at one end, and a slot to place the slide at the other. Miniature size. Inscription on top "Gedescope Brevete S.G.D.G." SGDG Sans Garantie du Gouvernement? acronym from Military and GovernmentCardboard made to resemble wood grain.

Item consists of a photograph of a group of people talking to each other with their backs turned to the camera. One man is crossing his arms and looking directly at the camera. In the background there is the roof of a structure that appears to be a bandstand.

Item consists of a mounted photograph of a group of men and women within a gated property outdoors. Four people are sitting on the grass with a dog while three are standing beside the seated group. The area is enclosed by a white picket fence.

Item consists of a photograph of a Christmas dinner. People pictured at the dinner are wearing various paper hats from Christmas crackers. Branches and ornaments of a Christmas tree can be seen on the left side of the photo. One man is also wearing a fake mustache.

McAllister, Manufacturing Optician, 49 Nassau Street, N.Y." - slide is dated at c. 1880s because that is when McAllister started selling lantern slides. Wood frame has a sticker on it with the letter Y written inside.

The Amazon, Berlin

Glass slide in wood frame. Image framed in black. Handwritten on slide in black ink "The Amazon, Front of Museum, Berlin, Germany." Handwritten in ink on wood frame "Amazon" the rest of the sticker has come off. Image is of an equestrian statue outside a building with columns. The statue is of a naked woman, holding a spear, sitting on a horse rearing up, with a lion latched to its throat. Cannot figure out which museum it's in front of in Berlin, Germany. Please note that the wood frame is a thicker cut than the others, and not a straight cut.

Bacharach, Germany

Image of the town of Bacharach, named for Bacchus, the ancient Roman god of wine, a medieval walled town only meters from the river's banks. The Rhine river once splashed up against the town's walls, but a landfill has been added to accommodate a road, train tracks and boat docks. In the image you can see the river, the spire of a church and rooftopes.

Image of an obelisk (with Egyptian Hieroglyphs on it) in centre frame, with two men standing in front and beside it. Looks like some houses have been drawn in and some foliage too. Very simple image.

Research lead to the Capitoline Museums on Capitol Hill in Rome, Italy, but unsure if Capitol Museum is the same as Capitoline Museum.

It is an illustration representing the poem "Coming Thro' The Rye" by Robert Burns (1759-1796), composed 1796.

Image is handpainted, but looks like a B&W photograph underneath. It is of a man standing alone in the middle of nature, on the side of a mountain on a cliff, looking up at the sky. There's mountains around him, trees towering over him. The sky is blue with some clouds. Date based on research that shows Edward Van Altena's studio was active during 1890s-1910s. This series part of Life Model Slides. "The most popular slides in Victorian times were 'life model slides', which depicted popular sentimental stories of the day.The slides were produced by arranging actors in costume in front of a painted back drop. Stage props were placed in front of the actors and the scenes from the story were photographed. The slides were often hand tinted with colour and sold in boxes, along with a text to be used as a reading.In particular the temperance movement and political speakers used slides to convert a mass audience."
