Children's Television Research (CHIMP)

This series contains the textual and audio visual records of the longstanding Children's Television Research project directed by Clive VanderBurgh and located within the school of Radio and Television Arts (RTA) between 1989-2003. The project is also referred to as CHIMP (Children's Media Project).

Assignment photographs

Series consists of 7,278 photographic negatives created by Ryerson staff and students in the 1950's and 1960's. The photographs were taken for use in the student newspaper "The Ryersonian", the academic course calendar, the yearbook, and other school publications. The negatives are arranged according to subject.
Contact prints for the majority of the collection are available for viewing in our reading room. The negatives are in the process of being scanned.

Course Calendars

File contains digital pdf copies of course calendars for the Yeates School of Graduate Studies. Calendars between 2006-2013 are divided by term (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer) and full year calendars starting in the 2013-2014 school year.

Course Calendars and class schedules

File contains copies of the Evening Studies calendars, Extension Course calendars, and Continuing Education course calendars and class schedule bulletins. The final print version of the course calendar was for the 2018-2019 school year. The Chang School plans to continue publishing the class schedule bulletins.

Alumnae oral histories

File contains 9 audiocassettes with interviews conducted by a Mary (Sandals) Caesar, class of 1965. She interviewed members of earlier graduating classes about their recollections of training and working as a nurse. Interviewees include Helen Carruthers, class of 1916; Gladys (Bateman) Steele, class of 1916; Florence (Stewart) Roberts, class of 1919; Isobel (MacGillivray) Carleton, class of 1919; Jessie (Campbell) Smith, class of 1919; Grace (Mitchell) Berry, class of 1927; Grace Bolton Farthing, class of 1933; and one class of 1925 graduate.

Toronto General Hospital

The Toronto General Hospital. On August 25, 1948, The Wellesley Hospital amalgamated with Toronto General Hospital - becoming the Wellesley Division of Toronto General Hospital. They would remain that way until 1960, when Wellesley became an independent hospital once again.
Series contains materials relating to the Toronto General Hospital, and to its amalgamation with The Wellesley.

Transfer of Schools of Nursing to Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology

Series contains correspondence, reports and associated materials relating to the transfer of Schools of Nursing from the Hospitals to the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology. The majority of the materials relate specifically to the transfer of The Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing to Ryerson Polytechnical Institute.

Special Events

Series contains items and files related to various events held by The Wellesley Hospital. Included events are long service awards, the Wellesley Auxiliary anniversary, the 25 year club, and the cornerstone laying and grand opening of the Medical Building.

Reports

Series consists of Reports created by various departments and organizations in the Wellesley Hospital. Included are annual reports from the Wellesley Auxiliary, The Board of Governors, and the Research Institute.

Photographs

Series contains photographs associated with The Wellesley Hospital. Many of them were taken by the hospital's public relations department and published in Wellesley World and other hospital publications. Files include staff members, nursing, education, events, equipment, and facilities.

Published works

Series contains published materials created by or about the Wellesley Hospital. Included in the series are 2 copies of the book written by Hospital founder Dr. Herbert Bruce, 2 copies of the Wellesley Hospital history book written by Joan Hollobon, and numerous magazines and newsletters written by Wellesley Hospital for the staff and the general public.

Florence Nightingale letter to Louise Darche

Letter written to Louise Darche from Florence Nightingale. Louise Darche was the superintendent of The New York City Training School for Nurses from 1888-1898. The two met when Miss Darche travelled to London in 1893. In the letter Florence Nightingale references Henry Bonham Carter, her first cousin and Secretary of the Nightingale Fund. The photograph (RG 946.02.02.02) was also referenced in the letter and was sent by Mr. Bonham Carter to Miss Darche.

Student fashion show, 1974

Photographs of Wellesley 2nd year nursing students modeling clothing in a fashion show held March 28, 1974. The show's theme was "Spring" and was held in the cafeteria. All clothing was supplied by The Patricia White Shop. The show was organized by 2nd year students and raised $400 dollars to help with graduation costs. Two of the photographs were published in the May 1974 Wellesley World newspaper.

Picadilly Night, 1973

Two photographs from "Picadilly Night". Picadilly night was an annual event held in the cafeteria by the Student Nurses to raise money for student scholarships. One photograph shows three women tickets at Picadilly Night 1973. The second photograph shows two student nurses Sandra Millbrook and Brenda Rol looking at a pillow cover at Picadilly Night, 1974. Photograph published in the January 1974 Wellesley World magazine.

1970 Winter formal

The School of Nursing's Winter formal was held January 30, 1970 at the Royal York Hotel. Photograph of three men and three women in evening wear walking together in a row. Photograph was published in the Spring 1970 edition of the Wellesley World magazine.

1967 Winter formal

File contains photographs and contact sheet of photographs from the Nursing Winter Formal. Included is a photograph of four couples posing in front of pillars on an ornate balcony. The other photograph is of four Wellesley Nursing students holding the Canadian Centennial maple leaf logo. The women in the photograph are (clockwise): Carolyn Riva, Virginia Vicary, Berenice Arentz, and Sandra Williams. This photograph was published as the front cover of The Wellesley World, the hospital's newsletter/magazine.

File contains three photographs. Topics include an early outdoor event on hospital grounds, Dorothy Eden and Dorothy Arnot addressing a group on a tour of the hospital, and a group of student nurses walking through the hospital corridor singing.

New nurses' residence

A new nurses' residence was built after The Wellesley amalgamated with Toronto General Hospital. The cornerstone was laid by Ontario Premier Leslie Frost during a ceremony held June 29, 1952. The building opened June 29, 1953. In 1971 the building, now being used as offices, was re-named the Elsie K. Jones building.
File contains photographs of the sod turning, cornerstone laying, and interior and exterior photographs of the residence.

Mary Willmina Ferguson portrait

Photograph of Mary Willmina Ferguson. Born October 13, 1889 in Richards Falls, Ontario. She was a member of Wellesley's first graduating class in 1915. She signed up with Canada's overseas expeditionary force as a member of the Canadian Army Medical Corps on January 31st, 1916. She received a British War Medal, a Victory (Inter-allied) War Medal and 2 Mentioned in despatches oak leaf sprays for her service over seas.
Removed from the the back of the frame was a yellow piece of cardstock with writing "Miss Willmina Ferguson Class 1915 - 1st graduating class) Wellesley. Meant a great deal to Miss F. [Fitled] in wherever she could help. Miss Ferguson went overseas in 1st world war. She was an outstanding nurse and very well thought of by everyone. A kind, thoughtful, intelligent person. Married later in life to Mr. F. Adams. We were very proud of her."

Re-organization of Hospital for Sick Children Nursing School

File contains meeting minutes from a Hospital for Sick Children meeting in response of the Lynch Report recommending that Nursing schools be moved out of the Hospitals and phased into post-secondary education institutions. Sent as a memo from the Principal of Wellesley's School of Nursing, to Hospital administrators.

Red Cross Outpost Hospital - Red Lake, Ontario

File contains memos and correspondence regarding The Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing affiliation with the Red Cross Outpost hospitals. This agreement allowed 3rd year nursing students to gain experience interning at the Red Lake Outpost Hospital in Red Lake Ontario - located Northwest of Sudbury, about 100 kilometers from the Ontario-Manitoba border. The Wellesley School ended it affiliation with the program in 1971.
