Phototeria at Jim McCowan's Barn

Items contains 88 digital images of the Phototeria taken at the Baldwin, Ontario farm owned by Jim McCowan (a distant cousin of the inventor, David A. McCowan), where the booth was stored until 2015.

Commerical photographs: one still life of a tea set, one advertising a fisher price camera for children - the image is of three children (two boys and a girl) and a note with the photograph reads "Put a camera in the hands of children and sharpen your own view of the world. The Fisher-Price camera was designed for younsters in the five-to-eight-year-old group". Four are head shots of a young man wth a mohawk. Two are of Grey Line red double decker buses with Kodak advertising on the side of the buses. Two are studio shots of Kodak cameras with boxes of Kodak film. One is of men in the middle of a soccer game, this photograph includes a note that reads "Participants in the 1986 Kodak 'Run for the Money' color reporduction contest will be working from this colorful sports action photo in their attempts to accurately reproduce the image for the ninth annual Kodak 'Run for the Money." Black album, "Photographs"

Black leather album, lined with satin, bound with black string. "Photographs" is embossed on the front cover, and "Royal Albums" and "Made in USA" are in gold letterpress inside the back cover. Snapshots are glued to 40 black construction paper pages. Primarily vernacular images of weddings, soldiers, and vacations. Only Dick Gossett, Alan Pride, Bill McMillan, Duncan Wallace, and Minnie (Wallace) Owens are identified. One photograph of young men is entitled "Bolsover Flirts."

Cream coloured card with grey border and oval photograph, showing a woman wearing an off-the-shoulder dress and heart necklace. The studio stamp at the bottom right is illustrated with a stylized version of the Prince of Wales coat of arms. The text reads: "The Carbon Studio./ Fraser Bryce,/ MANAGER/ PHOTOGRAPHER BY APPOINTMENT/ TO THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES/ THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES". Handwritten note on verso indicates the woman's name was Margaret and she delivered this card photograph to the Macgowan family for Christmas.

[8x10 Nitrate Negative]

Item is a nitrate 8x10 negative. Inscription on negative "Eastman - Nitrate - Kodak 137." Nitrate film was manufactured between 1887 and 1950, but Notman studios operated until 1936, and this negative was housed in a Notman envelope. Image is a portrait of a man with a mustache, with the background completely blocked out (painted in opaque red paint), and his face has been touched up with pencil. The man's face is closely cropped, to one side. Unidentified man.

Following the text, a design with three gold medals is embossed into the bottom right corner, reading "WORLDS/ COLUMBIAN/ EXHIBITION/ CHICAGO/ 1893" and "EXHIBITION JAMAICA 1891" and "-RDED/ -RPIZE/ -ARIS/ -889".

Item is a cream coloured cabinet card with portrait of a young boy, about 5 or 6 years old, seated on the edge of an upholstered chair holding a hat in his left hand. He wears a polka dot blouse and large polka dot ascot with short, probably velvet, pants. At the bottom of the card, embossed in gold, on the left "HERBERT E. SIMPSON/ PHOTOGRAPHER/ 143 COLLEGE STREET/ TORONTO." At the bottom centre, a coat of arms is also embossed, with a lion and unicorn and the motto, "DIEU ET MON DROIT", a variant design on the British Royal Coat of Arms. On the right, also embossed in gold, "SUCCESSOR TO/ LATE/ NOTMAN & FRASER./ COPIES OF THEIR NEGATIVES".

The man wears a suit and waistcoat and the woman wears a solid, dark dress, probably velvet, with a lace scarf pinned at the neck.

Photograph is a full length portrait of a boy and girl, seated on the end of a bench. The boy wears kilt and tartan with matching hat and holds a walking stick. The girl wears a loose, wide-collared dress with frilled bonnet. On verso, elaborate stamp with photographer's name and various seals indicating prizes won and societies the photographer belonged to, including Ediburgh Photographic Society, Photographic Society of Scotland, Royal Scottish Society of Arts, Aberdeen Mechanics Institution. The stamp also indicates the studio was "PATRONIZED BY ROYALTY" and was established in 1849.

Photograph of a group of 7 passengers in an early automobile, stopped along Stanley Park drive in front of the "Hollow Tree". This old cedar was a popular spot for group photographs in both cars and horse-drawn carriages. The stamp on the back of the card mount indicates this was taken by an official park photographer: "The Stanley Park Photographers, Head Office, 162 Cordova Street, Vancouver, B.C.". The negative number for ordering more prints is given as 4869a.

Cabinet card and tintype album

Item consists of a dark blue album with the words "Scenes By the Way" written in white ink on the cover. Pages are grey with cutouts to slide in and hold photographs. Photographs consist of cartes de visite, cabinet cards and tintypes and are either loose or glued onto the pages. Some have captions written in fading white ink.
Photographs were taken at studios in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; New Westminster, British Columbia; Summerside, Prince Edward Island; Ottawa, Ontario; and Chicago, Illinois, and all consist of single-figure portraits.
