This collection consists of photographic films, papers and chemicals used by various individuals for amateur or professional purposes. The collection also includes camera accessories, flash equipment, various lenses, exposure meters (light meters) and equpiment used for darkroom processing and printing. This is a growing collection, created to help preserve the materials used for analogue photographic developing, printing and enlarging.

Lorne Shields Historical Photograph Collection

The collection consists of a large number of studio portrait photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in carte-de-visite or cabinet card formats. There is a large collection of landscape and industrial imagery dating from the Victorian era to the 1960s. The collection also comprises many vernacular photographic albums, good examples of glass and metal photographic processes including cased daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. The fonds is comprised of the following 8 series: Portraits (sub-series for Groups and Celebrities), Vernacular Photography (amateur snapshots), Landscapes and Industry (sub-series for Slides), Albums, the A.T. Orr collection and a Miscellaneous group of images which were generally created in mixed media.

Linda Lewis fonds

Linda R. Lewis is Professor Emeritus in the School of Fashion at Ryerson University. Lewis earned her Bachelor of Interior Design from the University of Manitoba. She began her career at Ryerson in 1969 in the Department of Photographic Arts, where she taught until 2004, when she became a faculty member and Chair of the School of Fashion. During her tenure at Ryerson, Lewis lectured in design, art history and film theory and also served as Director of the Film Studies program. She has written extensively about design and has been recognized by the community as a design advocate. She was the founding President of the Design Exchange, Toronto, and remains involved with the organization as a member of the Collection Committee. In 2009, she was appointed a leader of the National Design Policy Committee, an initiative led by Design Exchange in partnership with Canadian associations, universities seeking to establish a design policy at the federal government level. Lewis retired to Emeritus status in 2010. After her retirement, the School of Fashion established the Linda Lewis Award in recognition of student excellence in fashion design history, design theory, communication design and fashion design.

Fonds consists of books, committee documents, and curriculum records authored or co-authored by Lewis, as well as one photograph and one exhibition poster.

Dave Heath fonds

Noted professional fine art photographer Dave Heath was born in Philadelphia in 1931. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, George Eastman House, and the Heliography Gallery. His work has been published in Photography Annual, Popular Photography, Modern Photography, Camera 35, Infinity, Contemporary Photographer and Contact. He was the recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships (1963. 1964). Heath taught at Ryerson as an instructor in the Image Arts program between 1970 and 1997.

Design Archive photographic collection

Design Archive Inc. was the professional company of photographer Robert Burley, who established it in January 1987 and acted as president until January, 2000. Design Archive Inc. specialized in architectural photography: work is project-based, with project locations including commercial centers, businesses, private residences, and public places of note. Interior and exterior architectural structure is the predominant photographic subject, with landscapes and detailed design highlights, furniture, and machinery filling out the collection. In 2003, Burley accepted a full-time teaching position at Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts and suspended work at Design Archive Inc.

These fonds include photographic materials, including photographic prints, contact sheets, negatives, CDs, and other miscellaneous items that were collected by Design Archive Inc. from 1987 to 2003.
