W. J. L. (Bill) Clark

File contains headshots of Ryerson professor Bill Clark. He was the Dean of Business at this time, and a member of the Joint Workload Committee of the Faculty Association and the Board of Governors. His photograph was published in the 'FORUM' magazine.

Lisa Crew

File contains head shot of Lisa Crew, a student in Social Work at Ryerson. At this time she died in an automobile accident and fellow students were soliciting funds for a scholarship in her honour. Her photograph was published in the 'FORUM' magazine.

Her photograph was published in the 'FORUM' magazine Apr., 1979 when she was Associate Director of Ryerson's Centre for Instructional Development in an article regarding the highlights of the Centre's First annual report. Her photograph was published again Apr., 1980 when she was invited to give a paper at the Sixth International Conference on Improving University Teaching.

Her photograph was published in the 'FORUM' magazine Feb., 1976 in an article about Ryerson's planning task forces for 1976/77. Her photograph was published again in the 'FORUM' magazine Feb., 1979 when Ryerson's Board of Governor's approved the reclassification of Jill Livingston's position to Assistant to the President.

His photograph was published again in the 'FORUM' Apr., 1980 when he was Dean of Continuing Education.

Paul Nowack

File contains head shots of Ryerson alumnus (Journalism) and Ryerson instructor Paul Nowack. His photograph was published in the 'FORUM' magazine Nov., 1986 when he was Dean of Applied Arts and participated in a conference at Ryerson. His photograph was published again in the 'FORUM' magazine Sept., 1988 when he was Dean of Applied Arts, and was appointed Acting Vice-president, Academic for one year. His photograph was published again in the 'FORUM' magazine July, 1979 when his death was announced - he was Dean Emeritus in the Faculty of Applied Arts at that time,

David Platnick

His photograph was published in the 'FORUM' magazine Oct., 1976 when he gave noon hour seminar about Ryerson's research project on wind energy. At this time he served on the executive of Ryerson's Energy Centre in the Education Program.

Electrical Engineering

Pictures of the dedication of Palin Hall (Feb. 9/79). Students from Electrical Technology working on the Wind Turbine Project, summer 1977. Preparation for the wind turbine to be erected on the top of the old Monetary Times building on the Ryerson campus('78). General Instrument of Canada Ltd., RF Systems Division, Delhi , Ontario and Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in a co-operative industry/education venture. The company presented Ryerson with a complete satellite receiving system and in return, Ryerson students designed and constructed a TVRO (Television Receive Only) demonstration unit for use by the company at trade shows (Aug.19/82). Dave Spaulding (Electrical Technologist) admires a computer interface box built as a teaching tool (Dec.10/82). Model of a statellite receiving station designed and constructed by Electrical Engineering Technology and Architecture students, presented to General Instrument of Canada (Jun 4/82). Electrical Engineering graduate, Jose Darwiche is seen with his thesis project, a fiber optic video link (Jun,24/83). Construction on a two-storey addition to Palin Hall that will house the Centre for Advanced Technology Education (CATE) (Dec.84).

Mechanical Engineering / Aerospace Technology

Several photos of staff, faculty and students from the Aerospace Technology department (1970-1977). Tour and Discussion Day at Ryerson , Jerry Karpynczyk of Mechanical Technology speaks to interested perspective students in the Aerospace Laboratory (1980). Aerospace Engineering students experiment in "The Hex", CN Tower (1980). Tom Kay, 4th year Aerospace student makes hockey equipment (1981). Bob Pope and Roy Churaman keep Mechanical Technology's antique equipment working (1982). Faculty member Peter Williams demonstrates the new CAD/CAM machine in Kerr Hall (1983). The Fan Club, Mechanical Engineering instructor built an industrial fan balance testing device, and an all-terrain vehicle designed and constructed by a team of second year Mechanical Engineering students, a fuel-efficient vehicle and photos of the wind tunnel installation were all projects that were initiated in 1984. Mechanical Engineering students present a picture of the 1986 Mini-Baja East All-Terrain Vehicle competition teams to President Brian Segal. The vehicle finished fifth overall for the highest showing Canadian team at the competition at the University of Maryland (1986). Aerospace Technology using DAISY the computer (1970)

Board of Governors 1982 alumni candidates

File contains 2 photographs of Ryerson alumni candidates for the Board of Governors. The photographs are of T. D. Smith, a School of Continuing Education graduate in Business Administration and Betty-Anne Exelby, an Early Childhood Education graduate. Photographs were not used in the Forum newsletter - but there were multiple stories about the BOG election, identifying both candidates.

File contains head shot of Ryerson student member of the Board of Governors Richard Paradowski. Photograph not used in the Forum newsletter, but Richard Paradowski is mentioned in several news stories during the 1978-1979 school year in relation to his role on Ryerson's BOG.

Gail Purchase

File contains a head shot of Ryerson Secretarial Science student, Gail Purchase. At this time she helped organize a seminar at Ryerson about career opportunities for Secretarial Science students. Her photograph was published in the 'FORUM' magazine in September, 1978.

Applied Geography Student

File contains head shots of Ryerson student Shelly Saunders, member of the President's Commission on Athletic Facilities Development. Photograph not used in Forum newsletter, but student identified in news story about Commission members.

Ryerson Electrical Technology Student

File contains a head shot of a Varondeo Singh third-year Electrical Technology student, involved in photovoltaic project at Kortwright Centre. Photograph and story in January 27, 1984 edition of the Forum newsletter.

Information Services

Front pages from the Ryersonian (1973), formatted and put together as a collage. A person (Michael Hamilton, 1975) from Film and Photography adjusting his Pentax camera shooting a scene. Both photographs were used as cover images for Technikos Magazine - Collage for the Autumn 1973 edition, and Michael Hamilton (with corresponding story) in the Spring, 1975 edition.

Fashion

Different photos from fashion shows that the fashion department presented (1975-1985). Included are photographs from "No Respect" (1985).

IBM presentation 86/5/12: System 36 (plus few campus shots)

File contains a series of slides used in a presentation about the IBM 36 system which "...combined data processing, word processing, business color graphics and office management functions in a low-cost, easy-to-use computer for first-time and experienced users." [https://www.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/rochester/rochester_4018.html]
A majority of the slides are screen shots, but there are also images of the IBM 36, and people using computers.
Also in the sleeves are a photograph of the facade in the quadrangle and an aerial view of Kerr Hall and the campus looking southwest.

Toronto scenes

Two black and white night scenes of Toronto ; one captures Yonge St., A &A and SAM the Record Man (1988) the other a moonlight background of the CN tower and the city (1990). Also four black and white photos of day scenes of the CN tower and the TTC platform at Sheppard subway (1988).

David Barr

File contains photographs of David Barr. Mr. Barr was the speaker at the Ryerson IMPACT lecture series. Mr. Barr, at the time, was the acting Executive Director of Communications for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communication.

Deborah (Debby) Littman

Files contains photographic head shots of Deborah (Debby) Littman. At the time of the 1979 photograph she was the President of the the Graduate Assistants' Association (which would later become Local 4 of the Canadian Union of Education Workers - CUEW). One of the photographs was published in the January 25, 1980 edition of the school's Forum newsletter. At the time of the 1987 image she was the Vice-President of the CUEW.

Annual reports and financial statements

Files contain copies of the annual report and audited financial statements for Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and Ryerson Polytechnical University.
The annual reports are distributed across three record groups - dependent on which department was responsible for their printing. Their organization is as follows:

RG 122.03 1987-1994
RG 395.17 1994-1996

After 1996 the university stopped publishing an annual report in this format.

Ryerson University Status: Miscellanea

File consists of T-shirts (2) gold with blue lettering, the front proclaims, "At Last!" while the back states, "Ryerson Polytechnic University"; graphic material stickers, cards, and pamphlets ; textual records "University Status Update distributions and two memorandum ; oversized memorda (2) university status update by Terry Grier for display.

Ryerson Community Park

Various photos of planning and construction of Community Park (1978) and Devion Square (1984). Several photos of Hod Meech (Devonian Foundation), Walter Pitman, Steve Moorhead and George Hume during several meetings in 1977. Photos of the Bird of Spring with its creator, Abraham Etungat (1977). In the second folder there is a picture of Gould Street during a TTC strike (1978) and many pictures of the official opening of Ryerson Community Park, Oct.13/78. Earlier that year in May, construction of the Quad was taking place.

Harold Brillinger

Harold Brillinger in the following activities :

  • June 1978 graduation, in the graduand procession and later with his B.A.A. degree in Photographic Arts.
  • 1980, teaching tap dancing in the Summer at Ryerson, Physical Education skills program; and a formal portrait of his students. A few of these images were published in Ryerson's "The Rambler", October 1980.
  • ca. 1980, 1 contact sheet of Harold dancing with a large group of children and teenagers all wearing hats (event or class unknown).

Architecture Building

Several photos of the architecture building at 325 Church Street prior to, during and after the complete build; as well as, the Official Opening on October 14, 1981, which documents the arrivals of John B. Aird and Bill Davis, the opening reception, speeches, tour, and dinner with some dignitaries and special guests being served at a table. Dignitaries in attendance were :

  • Lieutenant-Governor John Black Aird (1980 - 1985)
  • Metro Chairman Paul Godfrey (1973 - 1984)

Architecture Building (720 King St. W.) and Classroom photographic images

The file contains photographic images divided into separate files :

A. 1977 - The "Annex" Architecture building in flames and the fire aftermath, including the drying of books and journals.

B. 1977-1978 - School of Architecture at 720 King St. W. with faculty and students in process of architectural design (1977) ; official opening (1978) ; student projects.

C. 1973, 1982 - Student award winners.

D. 1981 - Official opening of the Hester How Day Care Centre at Toronto's City Hall with Brian Segal (University President), Paul Godfrey (Metro Chairman), and Arthur (Art) Eggleton (Toronto Mayor). The playground equipment was designed and constructed by TMU (formerly Ryerson) first year Architecture students.

FORUM newsletter, 1987-1994

Series consists of copies of the FORUM newsletter published by the Office of Community Relations. They were published throughout the year from September to June or July. Topics included Ryerson specific news, staffing updates and staff and alumni notices. This series contains volumes 13-17.
The final hard copy edition of the FORUM was published October 2005 - moving to an electronic format with its next issue. It was replaced by an online email newsletter Ryerson Today, on October 19, 2009.
