Alumnae dinner, 1981

Photographs taken at the Royal York Hotel shows a woman leaning on table top podium speaking with another woman on the other side of the table. They are identified on the back as Lotta Dempsey, and a member of the class of 1929. Lotta Dempsey was a reporter for the Globe and Mail, and then The Toronto Star.

Artifacts

Series contains artifacts created and/or used by the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association. Included are silver tea sets and coffee urns, a shovel used in the sod turning for the nurses residence in 1951 and later gifted to the Alumnae Assocation, and an embossing die used for printing.

Ceremonial Spade

Wood handled garden spade with metal scoop. Was used in the ceremonial sod turning for the new Wellesley student nursing residence.
It has two plaques on handle. First one is stirling silver and says:
"Presented to The Honourable Dr. Herbert A. Bruce on the occasion of he turning of the first sod for the Nursing Residence Wellesley Division Toronto General Hospital November 5, 1951."
The second plaque is brass coloured and says:
"Donated to the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association in recognition of their caring contribution to the people of Toronto and in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Wellesley Hospital Presented by Dean Emeritus, Susanne Williams, RN BNSc.Med Co-Chair, Wellesley Institute This 26th of May 2012."

Hospital Tour slide show

The 64 slide show created by the Alumnae Association as an intro the beginnings of the Hospital and its current (to the 1980s) layout and features. The initial slide show was created in 1980 with slides 58-64 were added in 1981-1982. Slides (put in order according to enclosed listing) are as follows.

Front of page 11 has a typewritten list of items placed in the boxes sent to Nursing Sisters in Africa. Box recipients were C. Tavener, H. Pangman, C.J. Cuthbert, L. Jamieson. At the bottom of the page is the mailing costs for all of the boxes sent out for Christmas, 1943.

Back of page has content listing for civilian boxes sent which were sent to Helen Cunningham (class of 1923), and Mildred McMullen (class of 1926). Bottom of page has list of recipients of letters and airgraphs (same as those sent boxes).

Alumnae World War II scrapbook page 17

Letter from Nursing Sister Rae Adams. Letter is blue and folds up into its own envelope - an armed forces air letter. Her letter is dated 3 days after D-Day and the landing on the beach at Normandy by Allied Forces. Rae Adams had been injured during an air raid on Catania, Sicily, on September 2, 1943 when anti-aircraft shell fell on No. 5 Canadian General Hospital, injuring her and 11 other nurses. She was sent back to England for recovery.

Florence Nightingale letter to Louise Darche

Letter written to Louise Darche from Florence Nightingale. Louise Darche was the superintendent of The New York City Training School for Nurses from 1888-1898. The two met when Miss Darche travelled to London in 1893. In the letter Florence Nightingale references Henry Bonham Carter, her first cousin and Secretary of the Nightingale Fund. The photograph (RG 946.02.02.02) was also referenced in the letter and was sent by Mr. Bonham Carter to Miss Darche.

The Wellesley Hospital

The Hospital for Sick Children affiliate pediatric program

The Hospital for Sick Children program, in place since 1919, was offered to nurses from Toronto General Hospital, Toronto East General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Wellesley Hospital, St. Michael's Hospital, Branson Hospital, Women's College Hospital, and Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Orillia. Graduate Nurses preparing for Ontario registration and students from the University of Toronto (come with their own instructor) were also in the program. Pediatric nursing was made a compulsory course for Nurses wishing to become registered with the Province of Ontario. The program itself lasted 8 weeks and covered conditions that were the most serious or most common in children including allergic conditions, cancer, congenital conditions, and exceptional children.

Wellesley School of Nursing - Nursing procedures

Wellesley School of Nursing nursing procedures manual containing instructions on a variety of topics. Manual was used during the time with Wellesley Hospital was a division of the Toronto General Hospital. Topics include patient admitting and discharge, room cleaning, medical procedures, pre- and post-operative care, medicine administration, charting, and equipment use. Included are examples of the variety of forms used by doctors and nurses and a separate booklet of information on oxygen administration published by the Linde Company.

The 1948 Wellesley Training School report compiled by Elsie K. Jones, Superintendent of the School for the Department of Health, Nurse Registration division. Also included in a letter and questionnaire from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.

Province of Ontario - Department of Health Nursing branch report, 1958

The 1958 Wellesley Division -Toronto General Hospital report compiled by Elsie K. Jones, Superintendent of the School, for the Department of Health Nursing branch. Also included is the site visit report by the Senior Inspector Schools of Nursing and the Supervisor Public Health Nursing, and a variety of correspondence surrounding the reports. There appears to be some correspondence from 1960 included in the with these reports - not sure as to why this was stored with the 1958 report.

Province of Ontario - Department of Health Nursing branch report, and Hospital Annual report for the Board of Directors, 1961-1962

The 1961-1962 Wellesley School of Nursing report compiled by Elsie K. Jones, Superintendent of the School, for the Department of Health Nursing branch. Also in the file is a copy of the annual report for 1961 presented by Elsie K. Jones for the Board of Directors of the Wellesley Hospital, and a copy of a report for the Department of Health on the title of person responsible for the administration of the educational programme.

The 1962-1963 Wellesley School of Nursing report compiled by Elsie K. Jones, Superintendent of the School, for the Department of Health Nursing branch - College of Nurses Ontario. Also in the file are copies of the annual reports for 1962-1963 and 1963-1964 presented by Elsie K. Jones for the Board of Directors of the Wellesley Hospital, and other correspondence and reports related to the running and registration of the school with various governing bodies.

The College of Nurses of Ontario annual report completed by Dorothy Arnot, Director of the Wellesley School of Nursing. Also included is correspondence and a questionnaire from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and the Canadian Nurses' Association, two copies of the 1963-1964 annual report for the Wellesley Hospital Board of Directors by Elsie K. Jones, correspondence relating to the College of Nurses annual report, and a questionnaire about student teaching facilities from the Ontario Hospital Services Commission.

The College of Nurses of Ontario annual report for 1965-1966 completed by Dorothy Arnot, Director of the Wellesley School of Nursing. Also included in the annual reports created for the Wellesley Hospital Board of Directors for 1965-1966 (2 copies) and 1966-1967, and the Canadian Nurses' Association questionnaire about students from diploma schools of nursing.

Annual Reports - Wellesley School of Nursing

Sub-series contains annual reports created by the Directors of the Wellesley School of Nursing. The majority of the reports are the ones sent to the Department of Health, and then the College of Nurses of Ontario to register the school. Included with some of these are the reports by the Department inspectors as a result of their visits to the Nursing School. The file also contains annual reports written for the Wellesley Hospital Board of Directors, and a variety of correspondence and questionnaires from other Nursing ruling bodies including the Canadian Nurses' Association and the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.

Miscellaneous photographs

File contains a series of miscellaneous photographs. Three of the prints are of a spread of nursing magazines; one is of an "Innovations in Nursing" display in the hospital's front lobby; one is a composite with the central image of the nurses choir with smaller images of older people; and the final photograph is of six children in the yard of a house.

Hospital information

File contains brochures created to give the reader information about the hospital as a whole. Included are four brochures from 1967 designed to be a "tour" of the hospital, and brochures from 1976, 1976, and 1988 that would have been given to people coming to The Wellesley for treatment.

Twenty-five Year club

File contains programs for the Hospital's 25 year club celebrations. First introduced in 1969, the dinner has been held almost every year since then. Included are two programs from the May 9, 1988 dinner held at the Four Season's Hotel, one from the May 4, 1993 event also held at the Four Season's hotel, and one from the September 30, 1997 dinner held at The King Edward Hotel.

Report of the Nursing Task Force at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute

The Nursing Task Force at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute was organized in response to the January 1973 memorandum regarding the integration of Hospital School's of Nursing into Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology. The task force formed in July of 1973. Ryerson Vice President Administration George Korey was the chairman and was composted of representatives all institutions involved. It's purpose was to guide the integration of the nursing schools from The Wellesley Hospital, Sick Children's Hospital, and Women's College Hospital into Ryerson's nursing program. Three working committees were established: Committee on Curriculum and Clinical Facilities; Committee on Teacher-student Affairs and Internal Resources; and Administrative and Finance Committee all overseen by an executive committee.
File contains a copy of the final report of the task force published in January of 1974, and one copy of appendix f - Nursing Task Force meeting minutes.

White and blue china condiment dish and lid. Plate attached to bottom. Blue line and flower pattern around rim of lid, top of dish and around edge of attached plate. The Wellesley Hospital coat of arms is on one side of dish. Lid handle is embellished with gold, and lid has small opening for spoon.
