Ceramic tile from fireplace in wooden case

Green bordered ceramic tile that is sectioned into 4 quarters. Each smaller square has a different plant or flower on it - shamrock, thistle, rose, and a leaves. Tile is supposed to represent flora of the British Isles - shamrock = Irelend; Rose = England; thistle = Scotland; and the leaves.
Tiles were used around the fireplaces in the original hospital rooms in Wellesley's "Homewood" building. This tile was been placed in a finished wood box of sorts with green felt backing.

Toronto General Hospital

The Toronto General Hospital. On August 25, 1948, The Wellesley Hospital amalgamated with Toronto General Hospital - becoming the Wellesley Division of Toronto General Hospital. They would remain that way until 1960, when Wellesley became an independent hospital once again.
Series contains materials relating to the Toronto General Hospital, and to its amalgamation with The Wellesley.

Dorothy Eden speeches, 1973

Cassette tape of Dorothy Eden reading two of her speeches given in 1973. The first is a speech given during a celebration of her career at The Wellesley on August 1, 1973. The second speech was originally given August 8, 1973 at the School's graduation exercises. It is unclear as to when the tape was recorded.

Small silver cup style trophy. Cup is silver and bottom is painted metal. Handles are on either side of the cup with twining patterned band around top of cup. Front has been engraved "For the Best Nurses in Toronto Christmas 1936 J. R. T."

White and blue china condiment dish and lid. Plate attached to bottom. Blue line and flower pattern around rim of lid, top of dish and around edge of attached plate. The Wellesley Hospital coat of arms is on one side of dish. Lid handle is embellished with gold, and lid has small opening for spoon.

Elsie K. (Jones) LaVenture

Photograph of Elsie K. (Jones) LaVenture in a wheelchair seated beside another woman who is holding a cane. They are holding hands with another woman - possibly Mrs. M. S. Roberts (Jeanette Simpson), class of 1915 graduate. Both women are holding 60th anniversary programmes. Photograph most likely taken at the Royal York Hotel at the dinner held to cap off the 60th Anniversary week of events.
Elsie K. Jones was Wellesley class of 1925 graduate and started working at the Wellesley in 1928. She held the role of Director of Nursing at Wellesley from 1937-1964. She married Cye A. LaVenture after her retirement. Elsie K. passed away October 4, 1972, less than a month after this photograph was taken.

Application guidelines

File part contains pages of guidelines, from different years, outlining the sources of funding available to members of the Wellesley Alumnae Association. The guidelines were sent out by the Vice President Patient Services for the Hospital V. Sinnott and the secretary of the Alumnae Association.

For 1986 there were three scholarships:

The Elisabeth Flaws Memorial Scholarship - available to active members of the Alumnae Association and are taking post graduate studies in nursing at the degree level. The scholarship was for $2000.

The Elsie K. Jones LaVenture Memorial Fund - is available to registered nurses that have been on staff at The Wellesley Hospital for a minimum of one year. Applicants must take a short term course in graduate studies. There is a one year service commitment to Wellesley after the course is completed.

The Mrs. Herbert A. Bruce Memorial Scholarship - available to current members of the Association and to registered nurses on staff at The Wellesley for a minimum of one year. Applicants must take a conference, seminar, workshop, or refresher course. Scholarship for $200.

For 1987, all the same scholarships were available along with one more:

The President's bursary - available to all current members of the Alumnae Association who are graduates of the School of Nursing. Applicants must take a short term course in graduate studies.

75th anniversary - 1987

The 75th anniversary of the founding of The Wellesley Hospital was celebrated with various events held over the summer of 1987. On June 7 The Wellesley had a SUNday at Woodbine Racetrack, raising $70,000 for the hospital. On July 11, 800 members of The Wellesley Hospital staff and their families had a picnic at Earl Bales Park. On August 27 there was a 75th anniversary Garden Party on the hospital grounds with a 1912 theme - the year the hospital officially opened. A plaque honouring hospital founder Dr. Herbert Bruce was unveiled.
The file contains a 75th anniversary commemorative sticker, and a copy of the invitation sent to alumnae inviting them to the Garden Party.

60th anniversary - 1972

The 60th anniversary of the founding of The Wellesley Hospital and The Wellesley Hospital Alumnae Association's celebrations were held September 6 - 8, 1972. Events included tours of the Hospital and a garden party on hospital grounds, class of 1972 graduation exercises, and dinner at the Royal York Hotel.
File contains 2 souvenir booklets, 1 programme from the Diamond Anniversary banquet, correspondence regarding the events, and a b&w transparency of Helen Carruthers' (class of 1916) article from the souvenir booklet.

50th anniversary - 1962

The 50th anniversary of the founding of The Wellesley Hospital and The Wellesley Hospital Alumnae Association's celebrations were held June 6 - 8, 1962. Events included a garden party at Casa Loma, the School of Nursing's graduation ceremony, tours of the hospital and residence, and dinner at the Royal York Hotel.
The file includes two souvenir booklets.

25th anniversary - 1937

The 25th anniversary of the founding of The Wellesley Hospital and The Wellesley Hospital Alumnae Association's celebrations were held June 28 - July 2, 1937. Events included a luncheon at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, bridge and dance at the Royal York Hotel, a banquet at the King Edward Hotel, a reception at Government House hosted by Lieutenant-Governor Herbert Bruce (hospital founder), Class of 1937 graduation exercises, and a picnic and swimming at Dr. R. J. MacMillan's farm.
The file includes one souvenir booklet, two reunion banquet programmes, and an invitation to the reception hosted by Herbert and Angela Bruce at Government House. There is also a 16mm film of the Hospital's Anniversary activities.
