American actress, burlesque performer. She is recorded as having performed in "Our Cinderella: A Burlesque" by William Gill in the Colville Company's 1878-9 season, and in "The Magic Slipper" for Haverley's Theater in New York in August 1879, produced by Samuel Colville's Opera Burlesque Company.

Lillian Russell, 1861-1922

Lillian Russell, born Nellie Leonard in Clinton, Iowa in 1861, was a famous comic opera actress in New York city. She made her stage debut in "Time Tries All" in Chicago in 1877 before moving to New York in 1879 and continuing her career in musicals, burlesque and dramatic shows. Near the end of her life, she was appointed as a special investigator to study immigration conditions by President Harding. She presented a report to the United States Department of Labor that suggested an "immigration holiday" of 5 years, the sifting of immigrants on the other side, and 21 years residence in the US before naturalization. Identified to be Cressie Leonard (1887-unknown) and Billy Leonard (1891-1974), both Irish-born English variety theatre entertainers, musical comedy actors and singers. Here they are photographed for the 1916 and 1917 touring revue, "A la Carte".

Photograph is a studio portrait of two women, both seated, arms resting on the one armrest with fringes. Woman on right is dressed all in black, with black hat and veil - perhaps mourning wear. The woman on the left is in full skirt with black trim and black top, white collar and black hat. Both have pink tinted cheeks.

Item is an unmounted group portrait, outdoors but with studio backdrop set up, two men sitting on the grass and two in chairs. In front of the men, is an 'x' made of wood used to hold up a rifle. All men wear vests, hats and sport mustaches. Man on right, on grass, is holding a pipe. Man on right, sitting on backwards chair, has a chain watch. Top and bottom left corners are cut at an angle.

Original photograph is in a decorative frame/case (daguerreotype or ambrotype?), and it is a studio portrait of a man and woman, sitting side by side, looking straight out at the camera, hands folded in lap. Woman wears a white bonnet and checked dress. Clothing of sitters suggest that original photograph dates from the 1850s. Handwriting on the back in pencil, not able to decipher.

They are wearing fitted dresses with skirts looping in front, narrow sleeves and high collars, most wear a brooch at the throat. Style is suggestive of 1880s fashion. Hair is up, with curled bangs. All four corners of tintype are angled off.
