Stereocards

Six companies manufactured these stereocard image pairs: one child and tricycle by E. & H. T. Anthony & Co.; eight landscapes by B. W. Kilburn; one landscape by Keystone View Company; one hand-coloured greenhouse view by Underwood & Underwood, Publishers; two hand-coloured garden views by Webster & Albee, Publishers; and one hand-coloured half-tone seascape, uncredited.

Blue and green cardboard mailer has a die-cut opening revealing souvenir photographs of Mount Vernon, Va. The mailer is addressed to Miss Lenore Parkinson, c/o Auditor of Disbursements Office, Bell Telephone Co., Elgin Bldg., Toronto, Ont., Canada, Room 902. The mailer is U.S. stamped, and cancelled.

[The Steam Man]

CDV size card with albumen image. Image is the invention of Zadoc P. Dederick. Inscription on verso "Geo. O. Bedford's Park Gallery, 166 Broad St., Newark, N.J. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1868, by Zadoc P. Dederick, in the clerk's office of the District Court for the district of New Jersey." Dederick invented The Steam Man and patented him in March of 1868. The Steam Man was a steam powered pair of legs rigidly attached on a horizontal swivel to the front of a carriage. Hence the carriage was able to be steered. The body of the Man is the boiler and the driving cylinder is mounted on the back. Seems like this CDV was used along with the patent (#75874).

Item consists of a photograph printed with a large white border, mounted flush with a post card backing. Photograph depicts a woman seated sideways on a stool, with her hands on her knees. She wears a white blouse, checkered skirt and thick black leather watch. There is a piece of a mantel with flowers and leaves on the painted backdrop. On verso, the words "POST CARD" are printed sideways with a dividing line for address and correspondence. A small design at upper right indicates where to place postage.

Item is a cream card with photograph of a well dressed black man. On verso, a long text in black letterpress followed by a purple stamp at the bottom reading "C.A. Stacey, Artist./ Over 56 Main Street,/ Medina, New York." The text is a brief biography of Richard Gordineer, a slave born to a Mohawk Dutchman and a black woman, who was freed in 1825 along with all the slaves in New York state. He was an excellent baker, and was regularly employed as a whitewasher until he lost all his savings in 1862. Gordineer died on December 11, 1884.
