A. 1977 - The "Annex" Architecture building in flames and the fire aftermath, including the drying of books and journals.

B. 1977-1978 - School of Architecture at 720 King St. W. with faculty and students in process of architectural design (1977) ; official opening (1978) ; student projects.

C. 1973, 1982 - Student award winners.

D. 1981 - Official opening of the Hester How Day Care Centre at Toronto's City Hall with Brian Segal (University President), Paul Godfrey (Metro Chairman), and Arthur (Art) Eggleton (Toronto Mayor). The playground equipment was designed and constructed by TMU (formerly Ryerson) first year Architecture students.

FORUM newsletter, 1987-1994

Series consists of copies of the FORUM newsletter published by the Office of Community Relations. They were published throughout the year from September to June or July. Topics included Ryerson specific news, staffing updates and staff and alumni notices. This series contains volumes 13-17.
The final hard copy edition of the FORUM was published October 2005 - moving to an electronic format with its next issue. It was replaced by an online email newsletter Ryerson Today, on October 19, 2009.

Annual reports and financial statements

Files contain copies of the annual report and audited financial statements for Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and Ryerson Polytechnical University.
The annual reports are distributed across three record groups - dependent on which department was responsible for their printing. Their organization is as follows:

RG 395.17 1994-1996

After 1996 the university stopped publishing an annual report in this format.

Fashion

File contains photographs of staff, faculty and students from the department of Fashion and Merchandising. File includes many photographs of various Ryerson fashion shows and fashion projects.

Film and Photography

File contains photographs of student, staff and faculty in Ryerson's Film & Photography program. File includes photos taken of photographs in Ryerson's Photo Collection at the Canadian Centre of Photography. File includes photographs of various awards ceremonies, including the Norman Jewison Filmmaker Awards. File includes a photocopy of a photo taken of a delegation from the People's Republic of China (1980) along with faculty from the Film & Photography Department. File includes a print ad for the film 'Sudden Fury'.

Interior Design

File contains head shots and photographs of student, staff and faculty in Ryerson's School of Interior Design. Photographs include various awards ceremonies, industry executives, contests, projects, presentations and the renovation and move back to the Anthony Foster Building from west Kerr Hall (1983). File contains 2 folders.

Women at Ryerson

Women's Week, Feb. 21-25, 1983. Sheila Copps, Liberal M.P.P. representing Hamilton West spoke on "Equal pay for work of equal value". Photos of Women's Week co-ordinator Audrey Herrema ; speaker Linda Ryan-Nye; and Charlene Roycht, Promotions Manager, Radio Station CHFI at Oakham House, Feb. 23.

Electrical Engineering

Pictures of the dedication of Palin Hall (Feb. 9/79). Students from Electrical Technology working on the Wind Turbine Project, summer 1977. Preparation for the wind turbine to be erected on the top of the old Monetary Times building on the Ryerson campus('78). General Instrument of Canada Ltd., RF Systems Division, Delhi , Ontario and Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in a co-operative industry/education venture. The company presented Ryerson with a complete satellite receiving system and in return, Ryerson students designed and constructed a TVRO (Television Receive Only) demonstration unit for use by the company at trade shows (Aug.19/82). Dave Spaulding (Electrical Technologist) admires a computer interface box built as a teaching tool (Dec.10/82). Model of a statellite receiving station designed and constructed by Electrical Engineering Technology and Architecture students, presented to General Instrument of Canada (Jun 4/82). Electrical Engineering graduate, Jose Darwiche is seen with his thesis project, a fiber optic video link (Jun,24/83). Construction on a two-storey addition to Palin Hall that will house the Centre for Advanced Technology Education (CATE) (Dec.84).

Ryerson Community Park

Various photos of planning and construction of Community Park (1978) and Devion Square (1984). Several photos of Hod Meech (Devonian Foundation), Walter Pitman, Steve Moorhead and George Hume during several meetings in 1977. Photos of the Bird of Spring with its creator, Abraham Etungat (1977). In the second folder there is a picture of Gould Street during a TTC strike (1978) and many pictures of the official opening of Ryerson Community Park, Oct.13/78. Earlier that year in May, construction of the Quad was taking place.

Athletics - General

Different photos of students fencing, playing squash, swimming and also practicing figure skating. The old rec centre (1987) and a sketch of the athletics logo (Eggy running or dancing?) There is also a colored picture of the coaches and teams (1991-92).

Library

Photos taken of inside the library between February and March of 1976. Students studying, searching the card catalogue and also taking books out. Several photos of pencil sharpeners attached to the end of bookshelves and an outside image of the Library building.

Ryerson Polytechnical Institute gold medals

File contain 4 obsolete Ryerson Gold Medals.
The medals are awarded to students who have a combination of academic excellence with extra-curricular contributions. Once the names of the medal winners have been provided by the Financial Aid and Awards Office, the Community Relations Department will arrange for the names to be inscribed on each medal for presentation at Ryerson's annual Convocation. These four medals, engraved with the name Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, were donated to the Archives because they are now obsolete. The current medals are now engraved with Ryerson Polytechnic University.

Applied Geography

Miscellaneous photos of students from the Applied Geography Department 1983-1986. In many of the photos a variety of map reduction and cartographic skills are emphasized.

Architectural Science

Included are photos that appeared in the Architectural Science brochure (March, 1990) and the Annual Report 1984/85. Each picture illustrating the hands-on approach to education at Ryerson. Students Richard Zoltek, Ed Nicolucci and Robert Smith with faculty advisor Bob Greenberg, and their scale model of the Toronto Normal School, circa 1852. The finished model served as the centrepiece of a Ryerson Archives exhibition in October 1984, depicting the 132 year history of education on St. James Square, as the university's contribution to Ontario's bicentennial celebrations.

Centre for the Study of Advanced Technology (CATE)

Photos of the old CATE facility (1985) and also construction of the new CATE facility. A $80,000 robot which will be used in a robotics course taught by Andrew Nemeth is seen discussing with a student (Chris Kulpa) how it should be programmed. Mechanical Engineering professor Andrew Nemeth, also demonstrates the robot to the National Research Council field representatives. President Brian Segal explains the operation of the ASEA 1000 Robot at a tour of Ryerson's new $12.5 million Centre of Advanced Technology Education (CATE), following official opening ceremonies on Nov.5/85. Flora Macdonald, then Minister of Employment and Immigration addressing the official opening of the Centre for Technology Education. Former managing director of CATE, Ike Goodfellow on secondment from IBM, watches Electrical Technologist Jeff Van Zuylen working with an opto-electronic measuring device.

Civil Engineering

Two file folders of photographs of civil engineering students. Several photos showing students experimenting with different projects from surveying, to students producing a topographic map via instrumentation, students using a computer and stereo plotter in a map-making process and students working on a concrete design project or a statistical project for research.

Continuing Education - miscellaneous (book 1)

Many photos of students with the Counselling department discussing course selection and career interests, also photos of convocation of continuing education students and registration. Gracy Baptiste of Continuing Education helps register students in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Administration courses (1977). From the Industrial Management Clubs of Canada you have Mr. Burkness and Easton H. Karam (May.1972).

Continuing Education - miscellaneous (book 2)

Photos of Continuing Education students during registration and when classes are in session. These students come from many different personal and professional backgrounds, but they share the desire to participate in adult learning opportunities (written in the back of one of the photos).

Early Childhood Education

Many photos of the Early Childhood Daycare Center. Students interacting with the children as well as teachers. Play time and socializing are the two important themes in these two folders(1981-1987).

Electrical Engineering

There were many experiments that students were involved in, from the Department of Electrical Engineering (1981). Some of the research was measuring the frequency and amplitude of sound levels, or conducting microwave experiments in a shielded room, or analyzing a problem in microwave communication. Instructors displayed a 'hands on" approach to the explanation to these many experiments.

Food, Nutrition, Consumer, and Family Studies

Many photos of FNCFS during the period 1979-1980. A student explains how a caliper is used to perform a skin-fold test. Also the Chemistry labs introduce students to the composition and preservation of foods, food regulations and sanitation. FNCFS team develops test data, while as part of their consumer testing course, students analyse paint coverage and durability.

Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering Technology (1981) - photos of students measuring and cutting forces in a Machine lab, welding metal and testing for strength. Group discussions were also included in the drafting room. Under faculty supervision students are given the guidance of testing the characteristics of various materials. The lab was the classroom where teaching and learning was a "hands on" experience.

Journalism

Several photos of the Journalism Department, including the newsroom, classrooms and studio (1985). A photo of Stuart Mclean (Faculty) and Lorraine Hunter.

Mechanical Engineering

1981-1985 Students in the Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy programs displaying hands on learning with the many intricate devices they had available to them in the department and labs.

Urban and Regional Planning

Photos of Urban and Regional Planning students (1981) at work, working on projects in the planning laboratory. Also a picture of the Urban Planning Collection on the 8th floor of the library, students using the sources that are available. There is also a picture taken for the '86 brochure in front of old city hall (downtown Toronto).

Alan Allman

File contains photographs of Alan Allman. At the time of the photograph Mr. Allman was being inducted into Ryerson's 25 year club. He was a professor and former department head for Chemical and Metallurgical Technology.

File contains a photograph of Roy F. Bennett. At the time the photo was taken, Mr Bennett was the President of Ford Canada, and he was also Chair of the inaugural Ryerson Lecture Series in Economics. His photograph was published in the Nov. 25, 1977 edition of the magazine "FORUM".

File contains photographs of former Ryerson Library Technician Stephanie Blake. Stephanie was the Vice-President of the Ryerson Staff Association in 1982, and was the first OPSEU union steward at Ryerson.

Board of Governors 1982 alumni candidates

File contains 2 photographs of Ryerson alumni candidates for the Board of Governors. The photographs are of T. D. Smith, a School of Continuing Education graduate in Business Administration and Betty-Anne Exelby, an Early Childhood Education graduate. Photographs were not used in the Forum newsletter - but there were multiple stories about the BOG election, identifying both candidates.
