McAllister, Manuf'g Optician, 49 Nassau Street, New York," and on the other side printed is "Herald Building, New York." Sticker on wood frame of a Y. There looks to be some pink newspaper framing the image, perhaps to hold it in place in the frame. Please note that research shows that the image does not look like other photographs of the New York Herald newspaper offices based in New York City. Image is of a building, in a square.

High Street

Glass slide. No frame. Black paper covering edges. White frame around image. Handwritten in ink on verso "High St. looking W. from Knox Ho." and in print "T.J. Walls, Optician, 12 Forrest Rd, Edinr." - T.J. Walls still exists today as an optician at 35 Forrest Rd, Edinr. Image is a street scene with clock tower, and another spire in distance. The title refers to the Knox house, one of Edinburgh's oldest houses and was supposedly once the home of Protestant Reformer John Knox. Dominating the skyline are the spires of the Tron Kirk and the High Kirk of St Giles where Knox preached his famous sermons.

Item is a certificate of Honour. Inscription reads, 'High School of Montreal. Certificate of Honour. This is to certify that at the June Examinations, 1906 Edward De L. Orr of 2nd year took first place in and honourable mention in Arithmetic, Dictation, French and Writing. Wellington Dixon, Rector'.

His only pair

Cream card with photograph of an engraving of an old woman in a rocking chair holding her hand through a hole in a pair of trousers while a young boy, about 5 years old, leans against the chair in only his shirt and waistcoat. There is a small white dog at his feet, and the angle of the window gives the appearance of an attic. At the bottome edge, in purple letterpress, "HIS ONLY PAIR." On verso, handwritten in pencil, "3-".

Honolulu

Four gelatin silver prints on either side of a cardboard mount. Images of Honolulu. Inscriptions in pencil read, 'Pemahou Avenue: Honolulu' and 'Surf riding, Moana Hotel, Honolulu' and 'Rice ploughing with water-bullocks, Honolulu'. Also inscribed in pencil in different script is 'Edwardian period tour photos, SITA $75, Honolulu, California, etc.'

Subject of photographs is primarily British military men riding horses and at camp in India. Some family photos are loose at the back of the album.

Lantern slide, wood frame with glass positive B & W slide - image framed in black and gold. Handwritten in ink "455 Interior Milan Cath." - sticker says that slide was manufactured by "T.H. McAllister, Manufacturing Optician, 49 Nassau Street, N.Y." - slide is dated at c. 1880s because that is when McAllister started selling lantern slides. Wood frame has a sticker on it with the letter Y written inside.

Invitation to Ball. Inscription reads, 'To have the honour of meeting His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales The Chairmen and Executive of the Citizens' Committee request the pleasure of the company of Misses Constance and Dorothy Orr at a Ball in the Windsor Hotel Montreal, on Thursday evening October the thirtieth nineteen hundred and nineteen at nine-thirty o'clock.'

Item is a borderless albumen print mounted on cabinet card. Depicts a storefront with wooden sidewalk in front and man standing in the doorway. Painted on exterior of second floor: "J.Y.S. Item is a black lacquered wood cover with painted decoration. White accordion folded pages with green edges. Photographs are mounted with paste and perhaps burnished. Images hand coloured. All folds in tact; no breakage.

Item is an accordion album with 50 handcoloured albumen photographs. An embossed red and gold cardboard sleeve protects the cover. Red and white woven fabric cover. White accordion folded pages. Photographs mounted with glue. Tissue interleaving.

Photographs are hand-coloured and largely depict women and girls in various activities and settings, some men - possibly monks, scenic landscapes and sites of interest, agriculture and crop farming, buddha statues.

American actress and "Gaiety Girl", Jennie McNulty was the leader of the Chroisters' Association in 1895, a predominately women's club with four small rooms for reading, writing, and relaxing and two large rooms for rehearsals.

Kiwanis showboat days album

Black leather cover, gold embossing ("photographs" and "showboat days"). Black pages with photographs glued in. Album bound by black braided string. "No. A Balmoral Album / Made in Canada by Canadian Kodak Co. Limited (Genuine Leather)."

Mostly collage work, cut out from show program, newspaper clippings of reviews and photographs from the London Kiwanis Club "Showboat Days Revue" at the Grand Theatre.

The review included glee club performances, theatrical acts and minstrel shows. The minstrel performances included several white performers in blackface.

Minstrel shows are a style of variety show, most popular during the late 19th and early 20th century, in which white performers use make-up and costumes to depict racist and stereotypical caricatures of Black people. The genre originated in the United States, but Canada had its own troupes and touring companies, and the format was popular with schools, community groups, and religious organizations.

Kopil self-timer model 2

Blue and clear plastic case contains a self-timer, an adaptor, and instructions. The self-timer is metal, and has "MOD. ll" in red, and a red and ivory painted plate with the words "KOPIL, MADE IN JAPAN." The instructions are on blue vellum.

L.S.H.LL 10 Years on General Principles [photobooth stip]

Item consists of a black and white photobooth strip of a man in a vest and tie. In all images he is looking to the left. On each frame is handwritten in pencil "813427" and on the back in the same handwritting is "L.S.H.LL 10 Years on General Principles". There is an uneven black border around each frame, and some damaged from fingerprints on the middle frame.

Item is a cream carte de visite with photograph of two women in a studio with formal park backdrop. At bottom, handwritten in pink ink, "S/4 illegible of Leil." On verso, photographer's stamp, "Thomspon & Sun(sic),/ Photographers,/ George Street, Peterborough/ NEGATIVES PRESERVED./ No." In blue ink, "2162/ - of Lady sitting/ for/ D.parne(?)" Below, in grey ink, "Dparnes" is scratched out with blue and below, also in blue ink, "W. Pepper." In pink, at centre of card, "202" and in pencil, at upper left "1083". Finally, beside the text "No." is the penciled number "127".

Lambert and Fellows album

File consists of an album with the words "scrapbook" written on the front in red and blue letters. On the cover there is a picture of a boy sitting at a desk with a crown counting coins. In the room around him are pictures of a knight fighting an ogre; a picture of two hunters, and a fireplace with a clock on the mantle beside a mounted horse figurine, some books. and a calendar. The pages are plain off-white in colour and have articles and photographs glued in, along with many loose clippings and photos spread throughout.
Scrapbook contains images and newspaper articles about the Lambert and Fellows families, including wedding and death announcements.

Accompanying loose materials include: postcards, photoengravure reproduction, pen and ink drawing, photographs - mounted and unmounted, newspaper articles.

Dates on pages and accompanying loose materials include: 1885, 1889, 1894, 1904, 1907, 1908, 1911, 1918.

Landscapes and industry series

Series consists of photographs of landscapes, usually featuring factories, mills, bridges or other industrial and man-made objects, and images of agriculture. There area few small sub-sets of images in this series related to sports, which show horses and jockeys, cars and grandstands at racing events.

Lantern slides (.1) and box (.2)

Wood box has sliding lid and is covered with patterned brown paper. Nine of the glass slides are painted with scenes of children engaged in play and work, and one includes the phrase "Good Night." Three slides have been painted with four vignetted cityscapes each. All of the slides are edged with orange tape.

Lantern slides series

Series consists of sets of lantern slides, often of historical monuments or landscapes. One set of painted slides appears to recount a story, with images of people outdoors on a farm, in a carriage, dancing and fighting. Another set of non-photographic painted slides depicts children working and playing. The slides in this series were mass produced for the commercial market.

Letter for $500 stipend from McGill Anatomical Department

Item is a typerwitten letter with blue text that reads, 'November 15th, 1910. Dr. A.E. Orr, Anatomical Department, Medical Building. Dear Dr. Orr, I have pleasure in informing you that at a meeting of the Board of Governors held yesterday, your stipend as Demonstrator in Biology and Embryology was increased to $500 for the current session. Yours very truly, W. Vaughan Secretary.'

Letter, P. J(?). Reid to relative

Thin 8 1/2x11 paper with the logo "REID BROS.,/ ARTISTS AND PHOTO ENGLARGERS" at the top of the page. The address is given as 33 Roeland Street, Cape Town and addressed to a relative in Canada. The letter expresses regret that over the death of a young woman named Jessie.

Lillian Russell, 1861-1922

Lillian Russell, born Nellie Leonard in Clinton, Iowa in 1861, was a famous comic opera actress in New York city. She made her stage debut in "Time Tries All" in Chicago in 1877 before moving to New York in 1879 and continuing her career in musicals, burlesque and dramatic shows. Near the end of her life, she was appointed as a special investigator to study immigration conditions by President Harding. She presented a report to the United States Department of Labor that suggested an "immigration holiday" of 5 years, the sifting of immigrants on the other side, and 21 years residence in the US before naturalization. The collection consists of a large number of studio portrait photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in carte-de-visite or cabinet card formats. There is a large collection of landscape and industrial imagery dating from the Victorian era to the 1960s. The collection also comprises many vernacular photographic albums, good examples of glass and metal photographic processes including cased daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. The fonds is comprised of the following 8 series: Portraits (sub-series for Groups and Celebrities), Vernacular Photography (amateur snapshots), Landscapes and Industry (sub-series for Slides), Albums, the A.T. Orr collection and a Miscellaneous group of images which were generally created in mixed media.

Loyal Orange Lodge Crandell

Item consists of a grey card with b& w photograph. Image shows a gathering outdoors on a large grassy space, with flags and drums and a horse on the far right. The large group is posed for the camera. Members of the Loyal Orange Lodge of Crandell, Manitoba, probably on a parade day. At bottom of image, handwritten (on negative), "L. O. L. CRANDELL 7/12/12".

Luxembourg Palace, Paris

Lantern slide, glass B&W slide in wood frame. Image framed in black and gold. Handwritten in ink on a sticker on the glass slide is "66. Corridor, Palais du Luxembourg, Paris" in french, and printed on sticker "Oelschlaeger Bros, 88, Fulton Street (New York)." Sticker on the wood frame of a Y. Image is of a corridor inside the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. The corridor is lined with busts.

M. F. Peck album

Item consists of a black album with the letters M. F. Peck embossed in gold on the front cover. There is a metal clasp at the top and bottom of the album (bottom one is missing a piece). Contains predominantly tintypes with some colour retouching. Most of the album pages are left empty.

Malta, Italy, China album

Green fabric-coated album with some decorative linear gold embossing. Spine torn along edges. First and last page have a decorative leaf pattern. Notations are handwritten in black ink. Photographs are mounted in between two layers, seemingly embedded into album's pages.
Photographs are of a family traveling through Malta, Italy, Portugal and China, taken at sites such as Pompei, Mount Vesuvius, the Temple of Heaven, and Summer Palace, as well as some photographs of the railway through a mountainous countryside.
Some photographs include images of the crew and family aboard the S.S. Somali, a British passenger and cargo steam ship that travelled between England and Hong Kong, stopping at locations such as Italy and India to drop off or pick up cargo. The ship was built in 1930 and was destroyed by a bomb while being towed on March 27, 1941. The shipwreck still remains upright off the coast of the United Kingdom, on the East side of Glasgow off the shore of North Sunderland.

Assuming dates of album are between 1930-1941, based on S.S. Somali's active days, King of Italy pictured would be King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and his Queen, Elena of Montenegro.
