Frances Henry is the former Chair of Diversity in the School of Journalism at Ryerson University. Henry is one of Canada's leading experts in the study of racism and anti-racism. Since the mid seventies, when she published the first study of attitudes towards people of colour, she has consistently pioneered research in this field. Her authored or co-authored books include: the fourth edition of "The Colour of Democracy: Racism in Canadian Society" (Thomson, Nelson, 2009); "Racism in the Canadian University" (U. of T Press, 2009); "Racial Profiling: Challenging the Myth of a Few Bad Apples" (U. of T. press, 2006); "Discourses of Domination: Racist in Canada's English Language Press" (2002); and "Challenging Racism in the Arts" (University of Toronto Press,1998). As part of her specialization in Caribbean anthropology she has published the only book on Caribbean communities in Canada, entitled "The Caribbean Diaspora in Toronto: Learning to Live with Racism" (University of Toronto Press, 1994), "Reclaiming African Religion in Trinidad: The Sociopolitcal Legitimation of the Orisha and Spiritual Baptists Faiths" (University of the West Indies Press, 2004), and others.

Henry is currently a Professor Emerita of York University in Toronto, and continues an active research and writing career. She has been awarded several research grants, including Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada grants to write a biography of a famous Orisha elder, the late Ebenezer Elliott (Pa Nezer), and to continue studies of racism in the university. She has published several articles and reviews on racism in the justice system and other institutions of Canadian society and has been a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Canada since 1989.

Frank Duerden is a Professor Emeritus in both the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria and the School of Applied Geography at Ryerson University. Duerden joined the faculty at Ryerson in 1973, retiring to Emeritus status in 2009. Throughout his career, his research and consulting activities have focused on land and resource issues in northern and rural regions. He has advised a number of Canadian First Nations communities and published on land and resource issues, and has worked on land claims and land-use planning in northern Canada, environmental assessment in British Columbia, Maori resource rights, and land-use planning in northern Russia. After retiring from Ryerson, Duerden joined the faculty at the University of Victoria as an Adjunct Professor in 2011, retiring in 2014, and became a collaborator in Arctic North Consulting.

Gail Rutherford is an artist and fashion design educator and a former faculty member in the School of Fashion at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (1976-1992). Rutherford was born and educated in Sydney, Australia, where she earned her teaching degree in Art and Design at the National Art School, East Sydney Technical College. Before joining the faculty at Ryerson, she taught Interior Design in the Hampshire Education Authority in London, England, then taught in colleges in Spain and the U.S. Her visual art--including painting, illustration, and fabric collage--has been exhibited in Canada, England, Wales, Spain, and the U.S.

Sanders earned his BFA from Mount Allan Unviersity, his MFA from the Universidad De Guanajuato, and his Master of Museology from the University of Toronto. During his tenure at Ryerson, Sanders acted as Faculty Supervisor in the Department of Interior Design from 1968 to 1975.

George Slavinski is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University. Slavinski earned his BSc from the University of British Columbia and his MBA from the University of Toronto. He began teaching at Ryerson in 1972 and was director of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management from 1974 to 1981. Throughout his career, his teaching and research focused on the application of Information Technology to the Hospitality industry. He has provided consulting services to hotel and restaurant companies and has designed and developed a number of major database systems, some based on financial data and others on warehouse withdrawal for the food service industry. He retired to Emeritus status in 2005.

Gerald Pratley fonds

Gerald Pratley (1923 - March 14, 2011) was a film critic and scholar, film industry administrator, and educator. Pratley was born and educated in London, England, and emigrated to Canada in 1946. Shortly after arrival, Pratley joined the CBC as a scriptwriter and, in 1948, became the Corporation's first film reviewer. Between 1948 and 1975, he hosted a number of CBC programs, chaired the Toronto Film Society and the Toronto and District Film Council, and co-founded the A-G-E Film Society. In 1968, Pratley founded the Ontario Film Institute, now known as the TIFF Cinematheque. He was director of the Stratford Film Festival from 1970 to 1975 and has served as a member of the programme committee of TV Ontario. Pratley authored six books, including Torn Sprockets: The Uncertain Projection Of The Canadian Film (1986), and contributed to a number of local and international film publications, including Films and Filming, Film In Review, Variety, Hollywood Quarterly, International Film Guide, Canadian Film Weekly, and Canadian Film Digest. He taught film history at Ryerson University, the University of Toronto, York University, Seneca College, and the University of Waterloo and served on the Advisory Boards of the film departments of Ryerson Polytechnical University and Humber College. He holds Honorary Degrees in Letters and Fine Arts from York and Waterloo Universities (Canada) and Bowling Green State University (USA). He was one of the inaugural recipients of the Toronto Film Critics Association's Clyde Gilmour Award and received a special Genie Award in 2002, in recognition of his lifetime dedication to Canadian film. In 1984, Pratley was named a member of the Order of Canada and, in 2003, was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Gillian Mothersill (B.Tech., MBA) is an Associate Professor in the School of Graphic Communications Management (GCM) at Ryerson University in Toronto. Mothersill is a graduate of the GCM program and earned her MBA from Queen's University. She spent six years as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Communication & Design at Ryerson. In 2014, Mothersill was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Printing Industries Sector Council (CPISC) after several years' involvement with the organization. Her research interests include typographic history, the economic costs of scholarly electronic publishing, and experiential learning.

The fonds consists of photographic chemicals, printing paper, film, dry plates, pamphlets, journals, trade circulars and photo bulbs collected by Gordon Meinecke during the course of his career, and from personal interest as a collector of historical artifacts. Meinecke worked in various photographic formats including 11x14, 8x10, 4x5, 2 ¼, and 35mm, sometimes producing prints as large as 30x40 inches. He primarily employed Kodak material for these purposes, but films from other manufacturers of photographic supplies can be found in the fonds, including Agfa Ansco Company, Ilford Limited, Polaroid and Triple Print Film Labs. Antique film packages, produced by companies like The Stanley Dry Plate Company or Dufaycolor Inc., are mainly empty or opened, and were collected for their historical value rather than for photographic use. A selection of photo lamps and flashbulbs from Osram, General Electric and the Wabash Photolamp Corporation are included in the collection, as well as two glass plate drying racks.

Greg Inwood is a Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration and a member of the Yeates School of Graduate Studies at Ryerson University. Inwood earned his BA (Hons.) in History and his MA in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario and his PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto. Inwood was appointed to a full-time faculty position in 1998 and achieved the rank of full Professor in 2007. He teaches courses on Canadian federalism and intergovernmental relations, the political economy of Canadian-American relations, and public administration. His research interests include Canadian federalism, the Canadian political economy, public administration and trade policy. In 2006, Inwood was awarded the Canadian Political Science Association's Don Smiley Prize for his book "Continentalizing Canada: The Politics and Legacy of the Macdonald Royal Commission" (University of Toronto Press, 2005). Inwood is a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Parliamentary and Political Law, a past Member of the Board of the Canadian Political Science Association, and is a past Director of the Ontario Legislature Internship Programme.

Turko earned a BA, BA (Hons), and MA from the University of Saskatchewan and a PhD in International History and Government from The London School of Economics and Political Science. Within the Chang Shool, Turko has developed and taught face-to-face and online courses and corporate training sessions, for which he has received the CESAR Teaching Award and the GREET Teaching Award. In addition to teaching at Ryerson,Turko has worked in both the public and private sector, and has held a position with the Ontario Government for the past 20 years.

Heritage Camera Collection

The Heritage Camera Collection is comprised of cameras, mainly from the Wilhem E. Nassau Camera Collection, the Irving G. Rumney fonds, and several other small, individual donations.

This collection traces the evolution of the tools of popular photography from the turn of the nineteenth century to the current digital age. Many of the cameras were manufactured by Kodak Canada or Eastman Kodak, but there are also examples from many other manufacturers, such as: Ernst Leitz, Minox, Polaroid, Nikon, Rollei, Mamiya, Olympus, Contax, and several companies that pre-date, and were eventually amalgamated into Kodak, including the Rochester Optical Company.

Items in the collection are arranged in series according on their form and function; the categories are based on the research and publications of Michel Auer and Todd Gustavson, and often overlap chronologically.

Hua Lu is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Ryerson University. Lu earned his BSc and MSc from Tianjin University and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He joined the faculty at Ryerson in 1990. His research interests include: Solid Mechanics, experimental mechanics, damage/fracture/fatigue mechanics, and interfacial mechanics.

Jack Gorman fonds

Jack R. Gorman (December 8, 1922 - February 24, 2012) was an administrator in the Office of the President at Ryerson. Gorman was born in North Bay, Ontario. He married Mildred ("Middy") Morland in 1943 and had two sons, John and Bill. During WWII, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Navigator and Wireless Operator. Before joining the staff at Ryerson, he worked as a councillor in Business Administration and served as an Alderman for the city of North Bay. He began his career at Ryerson in 1968 as Executive Assistant to the President (then F.C. Jorgenson) and Secretary to the Board of Governors. In 1972, Gorman's responsibilities were expanded when he took on the role of Director of the Office of the President. In addition to these responsibilities, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the York University - Ryerson Joint Computing Centre, Ryerson Applied Research Limited, CJRT-FM Ryerson Radio, and Niell-Wycik College. During his retirement, he was a member of the Board of the Canadian School of Management.

Jack Livesley is a Toronto-based writer and educator and a graduate of Ryerson's Television Production Course. Livesley earned his Bachelor's degree from McMaster University and a gold medal in Speech and Drama from the Toronto Conservatory of Music. He taught Music, Drama, English, and History for many years in the Ottawa high school system before entering the television industry, working mainly for TVOntario. Livesely has authored or co-authored five books, all on the subject of television and media education, has been a keynote speaker and workshop leader in major educational and media conferences in North America and England, and has conducted drama workshops at the Stratford and Shaw Festivals.
