Coronation Day at the Home of Mr and Mrs Smith, June 22nd 1911 Toronto Canada

Glossy print with white border mounted on thick card of the same size, and black paper of a larger size. Depicts a group of people outside a house surrounded by flags. A picture of the royal family hangs behind them. Recto caption, bottom right of image area: "Coronation Day at the Home of Mr and Mrs Smith June 22nd 1911 Toronto Canada."

Black album, "Photographs"

Black leather album, lined with satin, bound with black string. "Photographs" is embossed on the front cover, and "Royal Albums" and "Made in USA" are in gold letterpress inside the back cover. Snapshots are glued to 40 black construction paper pages. Primarily vernacular images of weddings, soldiers, and vacations. Only Dick Gossett, Alan Pride, Bill McMillan, Duncan Wallace, and Minnie (Wallace) Owens are identified. One photograph of young men is entitled "Bolsover Flirts."

Photograph is of a woman sitting in front of a fireplace, with Redbook magazine open on her lap. The support for the image is a neon-red paper. On the lower right of the tan card mount is embossed the studio logo. On the verso is inscribed in green ink: "To Jessie, Wishing you many happy returns of the day. Violet. Jan. 1 1912."

The card-mounted photographs are all studio portraits of unidentified individuals. The first of two cabinet cards is embossed with "Quartley", and the second is embossed with "Morton." Two Cartes de visites are printed on verso with "J.F. Rowe. A fifth card is identified as a "Gem" photo card, printed on verso with "R.W. Knorr" and an advertisement for the tiny Gem format.

Item is an ambrotype photograph in a velvet-lined thermoplastic union case, showing a male sitter in front of a studio backdrop. The case was intended for use with 1/4 plate daguerreotypes, as indicated by the manufacturer's stamp on the inside back cover beneath the ambrotype plate: "Littlefield, Parsons & Co.,/ MANUFACTURERS OF/ Daguerrotype Cases./ L., P. & Co., are the sole/ Proprietors and only legal Manu-/ facturers of UNION CASES, with the/ Embracing Riveted Hinge./ Patented October 14, 1856,/ and April 21, 1857."

Item is an example of an ambrotype with broken glass and worn coloured backing. Ambrotype is in a velvet-lined thermoplastic union case, showing a male sitter in front of a studio backdrop. File contains three cream-coloured cards embossed with the coat of arms of the University of Guelph and the words "Macdonald Hall/ Guelph" in the upper left corner. On the lower right, the photographer's studio is identified as "The O'Keefe's/ Guelph, Ontario". Two of the portraits are duplicates. The third portrait is identified as "Jennie". Each card has a piece of glassine tissue covering the photo inside.

Item is a cream coloured bi-fold card (3 flaps) with an embossed ribbon on the front flap at lower right. Inside, a vignetted photograph of a man in Canadian army uniform, with a badge on his right shoulder labeled "Toronto". The back of the photograph is stamped "HALKSWORTH WHEELER/ 109A SANDGATE ROAD./ FOLKESTONE". This is handwritten on the front of the photograph, and the date August 1917 is written on the card.

Cream coloured card with grey border and oval photograph, showing a woman wearing an off-the-shoulder dress and heart necklace. The studio stamp at the bottom right is illustrated with a stylized version of the Prince of Wales coat of arms. The text reads: "The Carbon Studio./ Fraser Bryce,/ MANAGER/ PHOTOGRAPHER BY APPOINTMENT/ TO THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES/ THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES". Handwritten note on verso indicates the woman's name was Margaret and she delivered this card photograph to the Macgowan family for Christmas.

Item is a light brown card with photograph of a man from the shoulders up, on a plain background. Embossed into the card at the base is the studio mark for William Notman and Son at 14 Phillips Square, Montreal. On verso, the name Guy Bulloch with the date 1900s is handwritten in blue ink.

Item is a cream coloured card with photograph of a man wearing a suit with hand-coloured purple tie. On verso, design in gold ink for the Notman Studio: "W. NOTMAN" with the Royal Crest at the centre and a ribbon wrapping that which reads "PHOTOGRAPHER TO/ HER MAJESTY" followed by the locations of studios in "MONTREAL/ OTTAWA/ TORONTO/ & HALIFAX". At four corners of the design are images of medals, which read clockwise from top left, "LONDON" "1862/ LONDINE/ HONORIS/ CAUSA/ 1862" "1867" and "NAPOLEON III EMPEROR/ PARIS".

Item is a cream coloured card with photograph of a boy seated in a studio setting. At the bottom of the card, in gold letterpress: "H. D. Wallis, Photographer, 61 SPARKS STREET OTTAWA". On verso, elaborate design in gold ink repeating the photographer's name and studio address, along with a handwritten note and negative number. A cartoon of two Chinese (?) men appear in the lower left of the design. The card design was provided by Free Press Print, Ottawa.

Item is a brown bi-fold card with an embossed design with shield and helmet on the front left flap, beneath which is the photographer's name in letterpress: "A.E. Lyon/ Photo./ Charlottetown, P.E.I." Inside, a photograph is adhered to the card showing three women in a studio, one holding a baby. All 4 are identified by a handwritten note on the inside of the right flap.

Item is a grey and green mottled-pattern bi-fold card with, art nouveu floral design embossed into the upper left corner of the front flap. On the front of the right flap is embossed the name of the photographer: "Craswell/ Charlottetown, P.E.I." Inside, a photograph of a woman with a short haircut. The image is very dark, causing the rest of her body to be obscured. On the inside of the left flap, a handwritten note gives her name and the date.

The photographer's name is given as "TOPLEY" with an address at "104 SPARKS ST/ OTTAWA". In the centre, text identifies the photographer as "PHOTOGRAPHER BY APPOINTMENT TO/ HIS EXCELLENCY/ THE MARQUIS OF LOFANE(Sic)/ AND/ HER ROYAL HIGHNESS/ THE PRINCES LOUISE."

The studio's name is given as "The Stride Studios". The sitter was identified as "Miss Helen Ballock." on a manilla envelope which contained the images. [Envelope removed]

On the verso, and handwritten note identifying the recipient of the card.

File consists of four card mounted photographs, 3 of the same man in various poses and 1 of a woman. All mounted on black card by studios in Montreal. The photographs were found inside the Agnes Osberg album (2009.005.023) with a yellow sticky note that read: Came from the same family But Not this album.

Group seated in car in front of the Hollow Tree in Stanley Park

Photograph of a group of 7 passengers in an early automobile, stopped along Stanley Park drive in front of the "Hollow Tree". This old cedar was a popular spot for group photographs in both cars and horse-drawn carriages. The stamp on the back of the card mount indicates this was taken by an official park photographer: "The Stanley Park Photographers, Head Office, 162 Cordova Street, Vancouver, B.C.". The negative number for ordering more prints is given as 4869a.
