Yates was born in Cochrane, Ontario, and was married to Barbara Wood of Montreal, with whom he had three children, Lynn, Gordon, and Pamela. From 1941 to 1945, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force, completing his pre-flight training at St. James Square---in the school that would later become Ryerson Polytechnic Insitute. He earned his Bachelor of Science (1948) and his PhD (1952) from McGill University. Prior to his appointment at Ryerson, Yates was the Associate Dean, Academic, of the Faculty of Engineering at McGill University (1967 - 1971). From 1963 to 1971, he was the Birks Chair in Metallurgy at McGill and served as Chairman of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering from 1961 to 1965. His academic research interests included corrosion and oxidation mechanisms. Before entering academia, Yates worked for Cominco, Inco, Alcan and the Research Division of Standard Oil Development Co. He was district Vice-President and Chairman of the Montreal Chapter of the American Society for Metals and National Director of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. Yates' five-year contract at Ryerson was terminated after four years following a dispute over instructor staffing levels and after Yates refused a teaching position in additon to his administrative duties. Despite a 1974 appeal from the Ryerson Academic Council, his position was not reinstated. Yates subsequently sued the Ryerson Board of Governors for breach of contract and settled out of court. After leaving Ryerson, Yates became Vice-Chairman of the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies. He returned to Ryerson in 1978 as a part-time consultant on the development of Applied Research.

Canadian Architect magazine fonds

  • F 2009.002
  • collection
  • 1955-[ca. 1990]

The archive contains thousands of negatives and photographs taken for publication in Canadian Architect magazine. As announced in the magazine's inaugural issue, Canadian Architect reviewed and documented both public and private structures, including churches, homes, businesses, airports, government offices and public spaces. The subjects of the photographs are generally modern Canadian structures, but images of some International sites and early 20th century Canadian buildings can be found in the collection as well. The collection also contains images of entries to the annual national design awards program sponsored by the magazine, the "Awards of Excellence." The collection also functions as a record of the changing nature of magazine production over the latter part of the 20th century. Canadian Architect was the first business publication in Canada to make engravings on site from original photographs, allowing for a rich selection of both prints and negatives. Instructions by editors and layout artists regarding their eventual printing in the magazine are often written directly on the prints, along with photographer's stamps, credit lines or captions.
