One of the 600 series of Polaroid cameras, first introduced in 1983, LMS stands for "Light Management System", which featured an exposure compensation slide under the lens. Camera features a 116mm single-element, fixed focus, plastic lens. This item includes the original packaing and users manual.

Item is one of 1.3 million Polaroid Land cameras manufactured between 1971 and 1977 in the United States. The 420 camera is the successor to Polaroid's 320 model. It features folding bellows, automatic exposure and an external light meter beside the lens, marketed as the "Electric Eye". The Polaroid Automatic Land Camera 420 was designed for 7.2 × 9.5 cm prints on Polaroid 100-series packfilm. The camera features a two-window split system for framing the photograph, whereby the user must first focus using the small rangefinder on the top left of the camera marked "FOCUS", and then frame the photograph using the non-parallax corrected finder with marked frame-lines marked "VIEW". Control over the exposure could be achieved by adjusting the exposure value +2 to -1.5 stops below the plastic 114mm f/8.8 2-element lens. A PC input is included for optional flash. The camera automatically selects both shutter speed and aperture, which range from 1/1200sec to 10sec for shutter speed; and f8 to f42 for aperture. The Polaroid 420 model originally sold for around $60. Included with the item in the collection is the Polaroid Focused Flash and Polaroid Self-Timer.

Item is an automatic snapshot camera for photographs on 126 film cartridges. The Minolta model is higher quality than many of the inexpensive, basic cameras for 126 cartridges. While the operation of the camera is simple, the engineering design is complex. One feature of most Minolta Autopak cameras was the ability to keep a flashcube mounted on the camera at all times, allowing the camera to authomatically fire the flash if needed. This later became common with electronic flashes, but was unusual during the age of flashcubes and x-cubes.

This model is a 400-X: cartridge loading camera with automatic slenium metering and Rokkor f2.8/38mm glass lens with fixed focus. No batteries required for meter or flash.

Item is an automatic, auto-focus 35mm camera with built-in flash and electronic shutter. The Hi-Matic AF2 was the first 35mm rangefinder camera with active infrared auto-focus, which uses an infrared beam to determine the distance of objects in the viewfinder. It was launched in 1981 as the successor of Minolta's Hi-Matic AF. The lens is a Minolta 38mm f/2.8 4-element with a 46mm filter thread, and angle of view of 58°. The focus of the camera is 1 meter to infinity and is auto-focus is activated when the shutter is slightly pressed. The viewfinder is bright and features parallax-correction marks. A 10-second self-timer is mounted beside the lens. The camera has a built-in "warning system" that automatically beeps to notify the user of low light, so they might turn on the flash. The camera's warning system also beeps at the user should the image be out of the focus or flash range. This was one of the last of the high-quality Hi-Matic series manufactured by Minolta. Dimensions are 53.5 x 76 x 129mm.

The collection consists of a large number of studio portrait photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in carte-de-visite or cabinet card formats. There is a large collection of landscape and industrial imagery dating from the Victorian era to the 1960s. The collection also comprises many vernacular photographic albums, good examples of glass and metal photographic processes including cased daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. The fonds is comprised of the following 8 series: Portraits (sub-series for Groups and Celebrities), Vernacular Photography (amateur snapshots), Landscapes and Industry (sub-series for Slides), Albums, the A.T. Orr collection and a Miscellaneous group of images which were generally created in mixed media.

The text is a brief biography of Richard Gordineer, a slave born to a Mohawk Dutchman and a black woman, who was freed in 1825 along with all the slaves in New York state. He was an excellent baker, and was regularly employed as a whitewasher until he lost all his savings in 1862. Gordineer died on December 11, 1884.

Title taken from card-frame. The bull in the picture with the name Ferdinand on the card-frame could be referencing the children story of Ferdinand The Bull from 1935, made into a cartoon in 1938 by Walt Disney - this would potentially date the image from after 1938. The tintype is an image of a bull with a man sitting on its back, arms in the air and holding two guns. Another man stands beside the bull, in sunglasses and a hat. They seem to be standing on a beach.

Item is a wood frame covered in red paper with gold details, with ambrotype held in place with brass matt and brass preserver. Ambrotype is a portrait of three women, sitting on a bench outside, in front of what looks to be a boat on shore. All three wear elaborate hats, with long dresses and white collars, and their hands in their laps. All three look directly at the camera. Ambrotype is a single sheet of glass, the ashphaltum was painted directly overtop the collodion surface and so it is only one piece of glass with no need for a cover glass.

The case was intended for use with 1/4 plate daguerreotypes, as indicated by the manufacturer's stamp on the inside back cover beneath the ambrotype plate: "Littlefield, Parsons & Co.,/ MANUFACTURERS OF/ Daguerrotype Cases./ L., P. & Co., are the sole/ Proprietors and only legal Manu-/ facturers of UNION CASES, with the/ Embracing Riveted Hinge./ Patented October 14, 1856,/ and April 21, 1857."

Collection consists of theatre programs from Great Britain and Ireland, Broadway venues in New York, and from various theatres in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, including the Shaw and Stratford Festivals. Opera and symphony programmes are also included in this collection.

Collection contains books created by the winners of the First Edition Book Award. The Award was established to honor 3rd year photography students who have made exceptional achievements in photobook production. It provides incentive for them to achieve early recognition that will have a lasting legacy in our collection.

As part of MPS507, a 3rd year Image Arts class in The Photographic Book, students are expected to conceive of and create their own book. This is, in part, related to work that has been completed in the co-requisite class, MPS506 - Photographic Production. These are both required courses for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Image Arts) Photography Studies Option.

The Award was established in 2015, enabling the Library to annually purchase the top five books in the class, as judged by the professor, and the Special Collections Librarian. Books are judged at the year end exhibition of the books and evaluation is focused particularly on design, sequencing, and integration of images and text.

Winning books are catalogued in the TMU Library system, including a note about the award, and housed in Special Collections. Occasional exhibits are created to showcase the works.

Item is an article about the Phototeria, written by Frederick Griffin and published in the Toronto Star Weekly on April 14th, 1928.

This collection consists of early optical devices commonly known as magic lanterns. The first report of the construction of a magic lantern is generally considered to be referring to the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens in 1659. The lanterns in this collection are dated from the early 1800s until the mid 1900s and include large professional devices as well as consumer models and toy magic lanterns.

The collection also holds over 500 lantern slides on a wide range of subjects. The slides demonstrate different iterations of glass slide projection and the evolution from hand-painted imagery to photographic and mechanical slides.

A black tin Improved Phantasmagoria Lantern with handle and crooked chimney.

Carpenter marketed his Improved Phantasmagoria Lantern as a consumer version of the famous Phantasmagoria lantern shows that simulated ghost and spirit projections during the late 1700 and early 1800s. The name is a misnomer since Phantasmagoria refers to a type of projection rather than a type of lantern. The handle on the lantern was meant to accompany a larger professional magic lantern show with a small, mobile projector, or for small scale uses.

The Lampascope Boule is a circular magic lantern projector with a hole at the base. This consumer lantern was meant to be placed on top of an oil lamp for home use. Lampascope projectors were elaborately painted with bright colours. This lantern is very faded but has remnant of red on the lens, and blue on the chimney.

A large biunial mahogany and brass magic lantern. Biunial or double lens projectors have two separate optical systems that allow transition effects such as dissolves between slides.

A hand-cranked 35 mm and small glass slide projector. This cinematograph was made after 1908 by the limited company Société Anonyme des Etablissements Demaria - Lapierre, when the two Lapierre brothers were obliged to amalgamate with the photographic manufacturer Jules Demaria. Cinematographs always had the ability to show loops, film strips from which the begin and end were glued together. For this purpose the upper reel was mounted above the apparatus on an extending bar. Longer films could also be showed but since there was not take-up reel the film would fall onto the floor or in a bag. The intermittent film transport was brought about by a rotating buckled rod that repeatedly struck the film down.

This collection contains Canadian cookbooks and textbooks with a focus on community created cookbooks, diet and nutrition cookbooks, high school textbooks, and food company cookbooks and pamphlets.

This collection consists of programs from theatre, opera, and symphony performances that the collector attended from 1952-2020. Most programs have the ticket stub tipped in, and some include newspaper reviews and clippings for the performances.

The collection consists of small pamphlets or periodicals issued by camera manufacturers to promote the sale of camera equipment or encourage the use of their films and apparatus. Most issues were published by the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY, but there are a few issues from other Kodak branches and other photographic companies. A couple of fiction stories and comic books on the topic of crime photography are included as well.

File contains annual catalogues of photographic products offered by Kodak. Catalogues include cameras, film, processing equipment and motion picture cameras and supplies. Issues distributed by Eastman Kodak and Canadian Kodak Limited, 4 issues are in French for the Canadian market: 1917, 1921, 1922, 1923.
