Convocation records

Records consists of convocation programmes, transcripts of speeches/addresses, press kits, photographs, invitations, cassette tapes, some videocassettes and related documentation.

In December 1996, the name of the Office of Development, Alumni and Community Relations was changed to University Advancement Office and, thus, responsible for Convocation and ceremonies until 2008 with the creation of a separate department, the Office of Convocation and Awards.

Photographic assignments

Series contains images taken by University Advancement photographers. They cover a wide range of subjects including campus events, staff and faculty portraits, donor receptions and building demolition and construction. A majority of the images were taken for the purpose of publication in the University Advancement publication "The Forum".

File contains images taken for use in the FORUM publication. Photographs of Maria Alberto, a 36 year employee at Ryerson in Food Services. Photograph featured in the April 2003 edition of the publication in the "staff spotlight" section.

Alumni achievement wall of fame

File contains images taken at an event unveiling Ryerson's alumni achievement Wall of Fame, located on the main level of Jorgenson Hall. Photographs include images of the wall and of the reception after the wall's unveiling. Photographs were taken on the day of the unveiling (May 28, 2001) as well as some taken two days previous (May 26, 2001).

Ken Anderson lecture

File contains images of Ken Anderson, Assistant Commissioner with the Information & Privacy Commission Ontario. Taken during his lecture entitled "Personal Health Information Protection Act: The Effect on Research and Consent Practices" at the annual meeting of the South West Region Ethics Board.

Annual fund ad

Annual fund pre-show meet and greet

File contain images of the Annual Fund thank you cocktail reception held in the Olive Baker Lounge located in the Podium building. The reception was held before the Ryerson Theatre School production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum".

Athletics luncheon

File contains images taken at a luncheon held to honour Ryerson's top athletes. Then Ryerson President Claude Lajeunesse is in the photographs as well.

Basketball practice

File contains photographs taken during Ryerson Rams men's basketball team practice in the Kerr Hall gym. Practice is last one before the team left for Halifax to participate in the national finals. One photograph from this file was published in the FORUM on March 29, 1999. Included in the file is a photocopy of this image.

File contains photographs of Ryerson Aerospace engineering professor Kamran Behdinan. Photographs were taken in various places and with various equipment. They were taken for use in Ryerson's "Invest in Futures" donation campaign.

Bridge building

File contains photographs of Ryerson's annual Civil Engineering bridge building competition. Included are images of various bridges made from popsicle sticks being tested for strength. Also included in the photographs are shots of the big cheque won by a Ryerson team last year in the national Troitsky bridge building competition at Concordia University.

Bridge busting

File contains photographs taken at the annual Civil Engineering bridge building competition. Included are images of bridge construction and demolition. Winners of this competition get to travel to Concordia University in Montreal and participate in the Troitsky bridge building competition. One of the photographs was published in the FORUM in March 2002.

BOMA donation - signing ceremony

File contains photographs of the signing and ceremony of BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) donating $100,000.00 to create an annual awards program that assists four business management students each year.

Mr. Santiago Calatrava

File contains photographs of architect Mr. Santiago Calatrava. Mr. Calatrava proposed a design for the new Centre for Computing and Engineering. This project was never realized.

Campaign launch - Invest in Futures

File contains photographs taken during a fundraising campaign launch for the Invest in Futures fundraising campaign. Included in the photographs are images of Ryerson executives, faculty and staff. Included in the file is a partial list of the people in the photographs. Photographs from this file were used in the July 2004 FORUM publication.

File contains photographs of Irene Campagna, assistant to the Dean of Business. The photographs were taken for the former Ryerson publication "FORUM" and were published in the December 2003 edition.

Campus engravings

File contains photographs of the various bas reliefs and sculptures that adorn Howard Kerr Hall. Included are photographs of "The Graduate" and "The Hockey Player" by sculptor Jacobine Jones. Also included are photographs of bas reliefs that adorn the south and east exterior walls of the building, done by sculptor Dora de Pedery-Hunt.

Canada Foundation for Innovation cheque presentation

File contains photographs taken at the awards ceremony for an essay writing competition sponsored jointly by Public Affairs and the Office of Research Services. Photographs include group photos of all the essay writers, with some being recognized for winning essays by then Ryerson President Claude Lajeunesse. Photograph of competition winner Jacob Levman with Claude Lajeunesse was published in the July 2003 edition of the "FORUM". Jacob Levman was a Masters student in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Car Hoist - Civil Engineering

File contains photographs taken of the hoisting of the Civil Engineering car (1991 Pontiac Firefly) up and into the 4th floor of the Monetary Times building. Car is used in the Road Safety Research laboratory.

Lawerance Carlson lecture

File contains photographs taken during a lecture given by Lawerance Carlson at Ryerson University. Included in the images are a picture of then Ryerson President Claude Lajeunesse.

Centre for Food Security

File contains photographs of former Ryerson director of the school of Nutrition Jennifer Welsh, Nutrition professor Cecilia Rocha, and Sociology professor Mustafa Koc. All three were part of Ryerson's Centre for Studies in Food Security. One of the images was published in the June 2004 edition of the FORUM.

CJRT - Continuing Education building

File contains photographs of the CJRT or Continuing Education building (now known as Heaslip House) at 297 Victoria Street. Images are of the original building - before the renovations took place. Photograph of the sculpture over the door was used in the March 2003 edition of the FORUM.

Raymond Chang donation reception

File contains photographs of the reception for G. Raymond Chang, member of Ryerson's Board of Governors at the time. Reception held to celebrate his donation of $5 million dollars to the University's Continuing Education school. School re-named the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education as part of this donation. Raymond Chang is pictured with various people as well as being photographed with the Ryerson Chair, which is given to donors by the University. Chair was designed by a Ryerson student. Image of Raymond Chang seated in the chair was published in the February 2004 edition of the FORUM.

Chinese delegation

File contains photographs taken of a delegation of visitors from China to Ryerson. Photographs taken in the Board room on the 14th floor of Jorgenson Hall. Featured in the photographs are Ryerson President Sheldon Levy and then Dean of Engineering, Architecture, and Science Stalin Boctor. No indication on the photographs of the purpose of the delegations visit.

Cite Libre magazine launch

File contains photographs taken at the press conference for the English launch of the magazine Cite Libre. Event took place at the City of Toronto's Metro Hall rotunda. Then Ryerson President Claude Lajeunesse was the master of cerermony. Speakers included Aurele Beaulnes, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cite Libre; Jean-Louis Roux, former Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec; Ramsay Cook, professor of history at York University; and the magazine's editors Monique and Max Nemni. Former Prime Minister of Canada, the right honourable Pierre Elliot Trudeau was in attendance and is featured in the photographs. One photograph published in Ryerson's FORUM publication featured Claude Lajeunesse introducing Pierre Elliot Trudeau to Ryerson RFA president and Urban and Regional Planning professor Joe Springer. Photo was featured on the front cover of the February 2, 1998 edition of the publication.

Jack Cockwell

File contains photographs of Jack Cockwell, group chairman of Brascan Corp.; Tim Price, chairman of Brascan Financial Corp.; and then Dean of Continuing Education Marilyn Booth. Photographs were taken around Lake Devo. Pictures taken for publication in Ryerson's Invest in Futures campaign materials.

File contains photographs of Ryerson Social Work graduate Sheri Cohen. Sheri Cohen graduated from Ryerson in 1996 and received an alumni achievement award in 2007. Photographs were taken along Victoria Lane and were taken for use in Ryerson's Invest in Futures campaign.

Continuing Education booth - Sheraton Hotel

File contains photographs of Continuing Education's booth at the Sheraton Hotel. Booth part of the University Continuing Education Association's annual conference. Pictured at the booth are the dean of Continuing Education Marilyn Booth; database and digital services administrator Thom Boivin; manager of marketing and publications Janet Hercz; and associate director Amy Casey. Booth won the association's gold award for excellence in marketing and publications and the New York Times best of show award. One of the pictures was published in the July 2002 FORUM.

Contract signing - George Brown College

File contains photographs taken at the official contract signing between Ryerson and George Brown College regarding the joint centre for Studies in Community Health. Then Ryerson President Claude Lajeunesse, then George Brown College president Frank Sorochinsky, and journalist Diane Francis - chair of fundraising campaign, are pictured. File contains photographs taken during the $12.5 million dollar cheque presentation by former Minister of Training, Colleges, and Universities Dianne Cunningham to Ryerson. One of the pictures was published in FORUM in the July 2003 edition.

December 6 memorial display - Paper Prayers

File contains photographs taken of the "paper prayers" display as part of the December 6th memorial. Display occurred in the Olive Baker lounge in the Podium building. Members of the Ryerson community were encouraged to submit their thoughts on violence, a prayer, a poem, a remembrance of a victim of violence or empowering words and they would be put on display.

Buildings demolished for creation of a public square (Yonge-Dundas Square) on the south-east side and a shopping centre/movie theatre building on the north-east side. Eaton donation

File contains photographs taken during the signing and reception for John Craig and Sally Horsfall Eaton's $1.5 million donation to Ryerson. Donation culminated in the naming of the Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health - an addition added to the existing Palin Hall located on Gerrard Street. Included in the pictures are then Ryerson Chancellor John Craig Eaton, Sally Horsfall Eaton, then president Claude Lajeunesse, Ron Besse, V.P. University Advancement Adam Kahan, then V.P. Bruce Elder research grant

File contains photographs taken during and after a talk given by Ryerson Image Arts professor Bruce Elder. Bruce Elder was the co-winner of the 2000 Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award and gave the talk as part of a series sponsered by the Office of Research Services. Pictures include shots of the lecture and group shots that include then dean of Communication and Design Ira Levine, Bruce Elder, then acting dean of Graduate Studies Rena Mendelson, then acting associate Vice President Academic Judith Sandys, and co-director of the Communication and Culture graduate program Don Gillies. Entrepreneur alumni night - Allan Slaight

File contains photographs taken at entreneur alumni night. Speaker was Allan Slaight of Slaight Communications. Mr. Slaight donated money to Ryerson University to support the Start Me Up Ryerson student business plan competition at the Ted Rogers School of Management.

Ernie certificate presentation

File contains photographs taken during the presentation of a certificate to Ronald Alexander (aka Ernie the hot dog man). Not clear as to what Ernie is being presented the certificate for, but Ryerson President Sheldon Levy and VP University Advancement Adam Kahan are in the pictures with Ernie. Ernie sold hot dogs on the Ryerson campus for 25 years and gave $25 000 dollars to Ryerson to fund a bursary for students. He retired in 2006. Ernie died in 2008 at the age of 80. There are also 3 pictures that appear to be unrelated - feature a reception of some sort and a man with violins in the background.

Fairchild Media Group donation and tour

File contains photographs taken during the tour and donation announcement by Fairchild Media Group. They donated $30 000 to create the Fairchild Public Affairs Award to benefit RTA students who demonstrate an awareness and understanding of ethnic, social or political issues. Two scholarships of $3000 each are to be awarded annually. Pictured are RTA professor Jerry Good; then acting RTA chair Robert Gardner; Fairchild Radio Station manager Gary Nobody; and Fairhchild chief operating officer Calvin Wong. One picture was published in the February 2001 edition of the FORUM.
