Paris album

Black cover album bound by red braided string. The word "Photographs" in gold lettering on front cover. Black pages with photographs glued in.

Photographs are of families and scenery in Paris during the World's Fair and the Carribean Islands during Turtle Harvest. Some photographs of ships and trains. Photographs of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, England.

Sites and locations include Eiffel Tower, unknown Caribbean island photographs - possibly in Jamaica - last page of photographs befoe yellow sticky note (3/4 photographs on page are of boats), top right photograph has a sign that reads "Mandeville Produce" in background; Mandeville is a town in the parish of Manchester iin Jamaica.

Themes include: snapshot views, ships and boats, island life in the Caribbean - fishing, agricultural activities, chattel houses.

Balmoral album

No binding - album pages are loose. Black cover embossed with "Photographs" in gold. Black pages, photos glued in.
Notes with album suggest the Parkdale Train Station, Hepworth, and Balmoral. Almost all photographs peeling away from pages. Some photographs quite yellow, some fading especially around edges.

Photographs are amateur snapshots of a cottage, children and family, picnics, parks, a wedding, canoeing, the beach, biking, landscapes, an automobile with a 1920s liscence plate number, posed group shots in many different locations, a horse drawn carriage, all thought to be taken around or near the Toronto area.
One photograph appears to either be a double exposure, or a photograph taken looking through a window and has captured the reflction in the window as well as the view beyond.

Sites and locations include The Simkincoe, located at Jackson's Point, Ontario.

Hand painted photograph album

Album cover in plastic held together with string. Black pages, photos glued in. Handpainted photographs. Doodles and drawing on pages in white ink. Several handcoloured photographs.
Pages in very poor condition - torn, flaking. Several loose photographs; yellowed and faded photographs.

Themes include snapshot portraits, domestic and farm animals - horses, dogs, sheep, cows; horse racing, crop fields, early vehicles and possibly an early tractor.

The American Annual of Photography and Photographic Times Almanac for 1895

Green clothe-bound cover is embossed with “Scovill’s Photographic Series" and gold letterpress "The American Annual of Photography and Photographic Times Almanac for 1895.” This 438 p. book contains photomechanical reproductions of Alfred Stieglitz' "Outward Bound", p. 27, and "A Young Garibaldi", p. 254. Unpaginated appendices include vendor lists and advertisements.

Scovill & Adams Company

Black album, no cover

154 photographs affixed to 24 black paper pages, 11 loose prints--the album cover itself is absent. The photographs have primarily vernacular images: snapshots of individuals and small groups, individual and group portraits, vacation scenes. Captions and dates are in white pencil: "1929," "Pt. Stanley 1937," "Wingham 1937," "Cub Camp 1939," "Churchill 1940-1," "Lake Joseph," and "Natural Park." On the verso of one photograph is partially written "Dear Gertrude,-This is a picture...of our new home...Mildr(ed?)" A truck is shown painted with "...S TAXI CABS, 2400 CHATHAM." A boat is shown painted with "The 100 Mile Cruiser To NATURAL PARK, SAGAMO." A park entrance gate made of tree branches spells out "CAMP TINAWATAWA, YWCA, YMCA." On a page entitled "Camp 1921" the prints have been typed on "Lake Couchiching." One loose print is written on verso "May 1963."

Canada album

Item consists of a brown album with gold embossing and darker brown detailing. Item has part of a metal clasp on right of cover. Pages are white with gold embossing and sleeves with cutouts to insert the photographs into. Spine is torn and in very poor condition.
Photographs are all carte de visite size, and there are 5 tintypes in paper mats spread throughout the album. Some are hand-coloured. They are all portraits, some are labeled in pencil or black ink on the back of or below the photograph with the subject's name and sometimes a date. The photographs were taken accross Canada in Charlottetown, Montreal, Halifax, Pictou, Ottawa, and others as well as Boston, Washington D.C., New York and Auckland New Zealand. Some of the studios that made the photographs in this album are the Notman Studio, Brady's National Portrait Galleries, James Inglis, and J.W. Black. Photographers include C.S. Lewis and Tanton.

Loose materials include: photographs, tintypes in individual envelopes.

Summer Snapshots album

Item consists of an album with a black leather cover with the word Photographs embossed on the front in gold; bound with black string. Labels adhered to cover read "Jack's own snaps taken while at OAC & Summer trips North & to England 1939-1941" and "#10". Pages are black with labels handwritten in white ink. Black photo corners are used to hold the photographs. Many pages remain blank, appearing to have never had photographs attached. Some photographs are coming off pages.

Photographs are of from Jack's summer trips to England and while he was at OAC. They are amateur snapshots taken at various camps and lakes in Ontario. Canadian locations include Long Lac, Quebec Bridge and Belle Isle; sports, parades and other events in and around Toronto; Niagara Falls, New York; Hamilton and Bellville Ontario. British locations include Salisbury, Cardiff, London, Bristol, Edinburghand Glasgow.

Notable themes include early telescopes and cameras; portraits, Queenston Power Development, The Manchester Citizen [ship], Blenheim Bombers, Kenilworth Castle, Changing of the Guards, Big Ben, The Crown Jewels and Buckingham Palace, Napoleon's Tomb, the Eiffel Tower, the English Channel.

Additional material includes one "Vote Nixon" card attached to a page.

Dates include: spring 1937, spring 1939.

Japanese accordion album

Item is a folding album with a black lacquered wood cover, including painted and ivory inlay decoration. White accordion folded pages. Tissue interleaving. 50 albumen photographs are mounted with glue. Images are hand coloured.

Photographs include scenic views and landscapes, architecture of buildings, portraits - mostly of women engaged in cotton-spinning, cooking and other activities.

Floral family album

Item consists of a black album with a flora design on the cover. The pages have painted floral illustrations around the photographs and gold detailing on the edges. It contains portraits of mostly individuals and a few families or group. Most photographs are by American photography companies from Iowa, Chariton and Michigan.

Landscapes and industry series

Series consists of photographs of landscapes, usually featuring factories, mills, bridges or other industrial and man-made objects, and images of agriculture. There area few small sub-sets of images in this series related to sports, which show horses and jockeys, cars and grandstands at racing events.

Matte gsp with no borders. Depicts a city landscape centred on a large building, which has signs reading, "Margaretaskolen," "Hotell Stockholm," "Aftonbladet," "SAS," "GULF," and "British European Airways." No inscriptions.

Wienhausen Klosterrcirche [Wienhausen monastic church]

Images of the parliament building in Victoria, B.C, loggers, Beacon Hill Park Victoria, B.C., an onion farm, a sweet pea farm and a harbor. Newfoundland and the Nile

7 photographs. 1 albumen, 2 gelatin silver prints and 4 photomechanical on either side of cardboard mount. Inscriptions in ink read 'General View of Assouan' and 'January 1907'. The collection consists of a large number of studio portrait photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in carte-de-visite or cabinet card formats. There is a large collection of landscape and industrial imagery dating from the Victorian era to the 1960s. The collection also comprises many vernacular photographic albums, good examples of glass and metal photographic processes including cased daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. The fonds is comprised of the following 8 series: Portraits (sub-series for Groups and Celebrities), Vernacular Photography (amateur snapshots), Landscapes and Industry (sub-series for Slides), Albums, the A.T. Orr collection and a Miscellaneous group of images which were generally created in mixed media.
