Item is a white card with raised oval photograph of a woman with an embroidered jacket and her hair pulled back in braids. On the bottom of the card, in gold letterpress, "WILLIAM NOTMAN PHOTO". On verso, photographer's stamp lithographed in gold, "W. NOTMAN" with the Royal Crest at the centre and a ribbon wrapping that which reads "PHOTOGRAPHER TO/ HER MAJESTY" followed by the location of studio in "MONTREAL". At four corners of the design are images of medals, which read clockwise from top left, "LONDON" "1862/ LONDINE/ HONORIS/ CAUSA/ 1862" "1867" and "NAPOLEON III EMPEROR/ PARIS". Below the design, also in gold, "Branches at/ Toronto and Halifax." Handwritten lightly at top edge, "77159".

A lithgraphed drawing of flowers in red and green frames the photograph on the diagonal. Beneath the image, in brown letterpress, "CARTE DE VISITE" and at the lower right of the card, "CARRIERE & CIE./ 159 RUE SAINT LAURENT/ MONTREAL."
