In 1986, Information Services was incorporated into the Department of Community Relations. In 1990, the Department of Development and Alumni Affairs was integrated with the Department of Community Relations to form the Department of Development, Alumni and Community Relations.

Contacts

This booklet is a guide to the subject expertise of Ryerson faculty. It is divided into three sections: alphabetical listings by topic, languages spoken and faculty name. "Contacts" was initiated by the President's Office under the direction of Gail Scott, Executive Co-ordinator, Community Relations and was produced with the assistance of John North, Director of the Learning Resources Centre. Until 1986 when the Department of Community Relations was established, the Information Services Department was responsible for the distribution and updating of future publications. (Information Services was incorporated into the Department of Community Relations.)

Annual reports and financial statements

Files contain copies of the annual report and audited financial statements for Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and Ryerson Polytechnical University.
The annual reports are distributed across three record groups - dependent on which department was responsible for their printing. Their organization is as follows:

After 1996 the university stopped publishing an annual report in this format.

FORUM newsletter, 1987-1994

Series consists of copie of the FORUM newsletter published by the Office of Community Relations. They were published throughout the year from September to June or July. Topics included Ryerson specific news, staffing updates and staff and alumni notices. This series contains volumes 13-17.
The final hard copy edition of the FORUM was published October 2005 - moving to an electronic format with its next issue. It was replaced by an online email newsletter Ryerson Today, on October 19, 2009.

Department of Community Relations

IBM presentation 86/5/12: System 36 (plus few campus shots)

File contains a series of slides used in a presentation about the IBM 36 system which "...combined data processing, word processing, business color graphics and office management functions in a low-cost, easy-to-use computer for first-time and experienced users." [https://www.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/rochester/rochester_4018.html]
A majority of the slides are screen shots, but there are also images of the IBM 36, and people using computers.
Also in the sleeves are a photograph of the facade in the quadrangle and an aerial view of Kerr Hall and the campus looking southwest.

Reference photograph files

1.59 m of various sized black and white photographs maintained by the Information Services Department prior to their incorporation with Community Relations. The photographs were used for the publications FORUM and THE ANNUAL REPORT during the period 1976 to 1986. The photographers were Jerry Davey, Journalism Department, Chris Bell and possibly Garbis of the Media Centre.

Applied Geography

File contains photographs of the signing of an agreement between Ryerson and Synercom of Sugar Land, Texas for the purchase of software for use in Geography. Includes print outline of the people in the photographs and a description of the Synercom agreement. File contains photographs of faculty and students at the Awards night for Applied Geography. File also includes random photographs of Geography faculty.

File contains photographs of the official opening of the Centre for Advanced Technology Education (CATE) Nov. 5, 1985. File also includes textual records describing some of the photographs. Attendees included: Flora MacDonald, Minister of Employment and Immigration, Gregory Sorbara, Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities, Dr. Brian Segal, President of Ryerson, and Art Eggleton, Mayor of Toronto. File also includes photographs of a class in CATE taking the IBM retraining program.

Fashion

File contains photographs of staff, faculty and students from the department of Fashion and Merchandising. File includes many photographs of various Ryerson fashion shows and fashion projects.

Film and Photography

File contains photographs of student, staff and faculty in Ryerson's Film & Photography program. File includes photos taken of photographs in Ryerson's Photo Collection at the Canadian Centre of Photography. File includes photographs of various awards ceremonies, including the Norman Jewison Filmmaker Awards. File includes a photocopy of a photo taken of a delegation from the People's Republic of China (1980) along with faculty from the Film & Photography Department. File includes a print ad for the film 'Sudden Fury'.

Graphic Communications

File contains head shots and photographs of faculty, staff and students in the Graphic Arts Department and Journalism Department. File includes photographs of various awards ceremonies and a print memo regarding a Graphic Arts Management Awards Night (Nov. 1976).

Hospitality and Tourism

File contains head shots and photographs of student, staff and faculty in Ryerson's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Photographs include various awards ceremonies, Ryer's Inn gala and the official opening of the Delta Hotels-Sheraton Corporation Hotel Computer Training Laboratory. Photographs are in multiple folders arranged by year.

Interior Design

File contains head shots and photographs of student, staff and faculty in Ryerson's School of Interior Design. Photographs include various awards ceremonies, industry executives, contests, projects, presentations and the renovation and move back to the Anthony Foster Building from west Kerr Hall (1983). File contains 2 folders.

Information Services

Front pages from the Ryersonian (1973), formatted and put together as a collage. A person (Michael Hamilton, 1975) from Film and Photography adjusting his Pentax camera shooting a scene. Both photographs were used as cover images for Technikos Magazine - Collage for the Autumn 1973 edition, and Michael Hamilton (with corresponding story) in the Spring, 1975 edition.

Athletics - basketball

Photos included: Ryerson Kevin St. Kitts from the RAMS scoring the upset of the year beating York University (Jan. 30, 1987 edition of Forum) Also T. Haggerty the RAMS coach (1994). RAMS basketball team (male and female) (1994).

Toronto scenes

Two black and white night scenes of Toronto ; one captures Yonge St., A &A and SAM the Record Man (1988) the other a moonlight background of the CN tower and the city (1990). Also four black and white photos of day scenes of the CN tower and the TTC platform at Sheppard subway (1988).

Journalism

File contains head shots and photographs of faculty and students in Ryerson's School of Journalism. File also contains photographs of others in the journalism community including Knowlton Nash and Pierre Berton. File includes photographs of various awards ceremonies, including the Atkinson Lecture Series. Photographs are stored in two folders one containing oversize photographs.

Summer at Ryerson

Summer at Ryerson, activities captured around the campus. Trillium Pottery , Arts and Crafts and The Subway Singers participate along Dundas and Gould Streets. The marching bagpipe ensemble also participating in events.

Library

Photos taken of inside the library between February and March of 1976. Students studying, searching the card catalogue and also taking books out. Several photos of pencil sharpeners attached to the end of bookshelves and an outside image of the Library building.

Miscellaneous

File contains photographs of a miscellaneous nature. All of the photographs are stored in a separate oversize envelope.

Walter Pitman

File contains photographs and head shots of Ryerson President Walter Pitman (1975-1980). Photographs include the President with staff, faculty and students at various functions including his farewell party. File includes photocopy of a head shot and brief textual information about his tenure as President of Ryerson.

President's Office

File contains photographs of Ryerson President Brian Segal along with staff and faculty. File includes photographs of various ceremonies, including the President's Christmas Party and convocation.

Radio and Television Arts (RTA)

The file consists of photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets of RTA students and faculty, including students from the Bahamas graduating in class and graduating in 1977; the Media Skills Development Project, 1980; RTA awards presentations; and other events. Some images have been printed in the Rambler and the Forum.

Brian Segal

Images of Dr. Brian Segal, photos as he is introduced as the new president. Multiple copies of Dr. Brian Segal as he liaising with different government officials and media.

Tom Sosa

File contains head shots and photographs of Thomas G. Sosa, Ryerson's Vice President, Administration and faculty at various events including the President's Christmas Party, the Molson Corporate Challege (team relay run), and at the official opening of the Centre for Advanced Technology Education (CATE). File includes a printed page which describes the photograph of the official opening of CATE.

Theatre School

File contains photographs of student, staff and faculty in Ryerson's Theatre School. File includes photographs of various events including classes, the Royal Academy of Dancing International Summer School (held at Ryerson in 1980), and performances of the Ryerson Theatre Company. File contains 5 pages of photocopies of photographs.

Jorgenson Hall

File contains photographs of the inside and outside of Jorgenson Hall, including the Jorgenson Hall Sod Turning Ceremony in 1969 with Minister William Davis attending. Photographs include various Ryerson staff, students, administrators and construction workers.

Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

File contains photographs of the Learning Resources Centre with faculty, librarians, staff and students. The photographs include: the official opening of the Library's DOBIS/LIBIS computer system 1979 ; the new microcomputer facility in the Learning Resources Centre ; the official opening of the Donald Mordell Learning Resources Centre by the Honourable Pauline M. McGibbon, Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, 1974.

Open College

File contains head shots and photographs of Ryerson staff, faculty and students of Open College which was broadcast on CJRT FM 91.1.

Food Services

Various pictures of staff and managers in Food Services from 1976 -1983. Also included is a photo of the staff and faculty cafeteria .

Howard Kerr Hall

Photos of Kerr Hall and the Quad. Included from the Admissions Bulletin 1970 a photo taken of the Normal School facade of 1852 marking the entrance of Ryerson's Quadrangle.

Early Childhood Development

Several photos of children playing in the Early Childhood Center. Some photos from 1974. Included are photos from the day nursery Easter parade, Spring 1982 and Halloween 1986.

Human Resources

Images of staff from the Personnel/Human Resources Department, 1981 also a photo of Doddie Brown at her retirement party, 1986.

Oakham House

Photos of the Oakham House Choir, Variations in Quilting, a workshop for beginners and a Make Your Own Jewelry workshop. In the over size box there is a large photo of firemen attending to the flooded ceilings in Oakham House.

Math and Physics

Dec. 10/82 Ryerson received a $318,000 grant from the Ontario Ministry of Energy to further the Institute's testing and development of more efficient appliances for burning wood and other alternative fuels. Different types of research in Ryerson's calorimeter laboratory are photographed with professors and lab technologists working on experimental data.

Research and Innovation

December 1982, Ryerson received a $318,000 grant from the Ontario Ministry of Energy to further the Institute's testing and development of more efficient appliances for burning wood and other alternative fuels. April 1986, The Office of Research and Innovation houses the marketing operations of the Computer Keeper, Ryerson's own anti-theft brackets for computer hardware.

RIDC

The RIDC (Ryerson International Development Center) 1981-1986, Director, Phil Rawkins and Sam Mikhail RIDC Program Director of Technology initiated many partnerships with scholarly institutions, research and training centers in Brazil, China, Jordan, Peru and the Asia-Pacific region. President Dr. Brian Segal also, signing a preliminary agreement with Dr. Carlos Belona President of Instituto Superior Technologico San Ignacio de Loyola, Lima Peru (SIL), whereby RIDC would provide computer courses.

Women at Ryerson

Women's Week, Feb. 21-25, 1983. Sheila Copps, Liberal M.P.P. representing Hamilton West spoke on "Equal pay for work of equal value". Photos of Women's Week co-ordinator Audrey Herrema ; speaker Linda Ryan-Nye; and Charlene Roycht, Promotions Manager, Radio Station CHFI at Oakham House, Feb. 23.

SURPI

Pictures of students from SURPI holding a mock funeral in response to proposed cutbacks in certain programs (Feb.81). Broom ball on Lake Devonian(Devo?) for the annual ice carnival "Miami Ice" (Jan.86). Rally at Convocation Hall against underfunding organized by SURPI. In the oversize file a photo of a student participating in an "all you can eat match".

Electrical Engineering

Pictures of the dedication of Palin Hall (Feb. 9/79). Students from Electrical Technology working on the Wind Turbine Project, summer 1977. Preparation for the wind turbine to be erected on the top of the old Monetary Times building on the Ryerson campus('78). General Instrument of Canada Ltd., RF Systems Division, Delhi , Ontario and Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in a co-operative industry/education venture. The company presented Ryerson with a complete satellite receiving system and in return, Ryerson students designed and constructed a TVRO (Television Receive Only) demonstration unit for use by the company at trade shows (Aug.19/82). Dave Spaulding (Electrical Technologist) admires a computer interface box built as a teaching tool (Dec.10/82). Model of a statellite receiving station designed and constructed by Electrical Engineering Technology and Architecture students, presented to General Instrument of Canada (Jun 4/82). Electrical Engineering graduate, Jose Darwiche is seen with his thesis project, a fiber optic video link (Jun,24/83). Construction on a two-storey addition to Palin Hall that will house the Centre for Advanced Technology Education (CATE) (Dec.84).

Mechanical Engineering / Aerospace Technology

Several photos of staff, faculty and students from the Aerospace Technology department (1970-1977). Tour and Discussion Day at Ryerson , Jerry Karpynczyk of Mechanical Technology speaks to interested perspective students in the Aerospace Laboratory (1980). Aerospace Engineering students experiment in "The Hex", CN Tower (1980). Tom Kay, 4th year Aerospace student makes hockey equipment (1981). Bob Pope and Roy Churaman keep Mechanical Technology's antique equipment working (1982). Faculty member Peter Williams demonstrates the new CAD/CAM machine in Kerr Hall (1983). The Fan Club, Mechanical Engineering instructor built an industrial fan balance testing device, and an all-terrain vehicle designed and constructed by a team of second year Mechanical Engineering students, a fuel-efficient vehicle and photos of the wind tunnel installation were all projects that were initiated in 1984. Mechanical Engineering students present a picture of the 1986 Mini-Baja East All-Terrain Vehicle competition teams to President Brian Segal. The vehicle finished fifth overall for the highest showing Canadian team at the competition at the University of Maryland (1986). Aerospace Technology using DAISY the computer (1970)

Civil Engineering

Ryerson Community Park

Various photos of planning and construction of Community Park (1978) and Devion Square (1984). Several photos of Hod Meech (Devonian Foundation), Walter Pitman, Steve Moorhead and George Hume during several meetings in 1977. Photos of the Bird of Spring with its creator, Abraham Etungat (1977). In the second folder there is a picture of Gould Street during a TTC strike (1978) and many pictures of the official opening of Ryerson Community Park, Oct.13/78. Earlier that year in May, construction of the Quad was taking place.

Continuing Education

Several events (1977-1983) of the Continuing Education Department are displayed through many black and white photos. Renovations and the move to their temporary office space (1977-1983). There are also photos of the farewell reception for former Dean of Continuing Education, Ken Mackeracher (1981) and Gail Sousa for winning the 1979/80 Fall/Winter calendar. Recording Your Recollections group formed following Summer at Ryerson course June, 1980. Jazz in June (1982) and Phantasmagoria for Kids (1980). Continuing Education awards (1983).

Convocation - Spring 1986

Josie Marcellin and Robert Stassen both 1986 gold medallist are photographed after receiving their gold medals. A photo of Brian Segal, Doddie Brown and Larry Gray at convocation. Another photo of Brian Segal presenting to George Thomson a fellowship award for developing public policy for the welfare of children (convocation June/86).

Centre for the Study of Advanced Technology (CATE)

Included are photos from Denis Hall farewell party, Nov/85, Oakham House. Also , during National Universities Week Oct.19-26, 1985 the official opening of Ryerson's new $12.5 million Centre of Advanced Technology Education (CATE). Guests for the opening included Malcolm Gissing, President and General Manager, Hewlett-Packard; His Worship Mayor Arthur Eggleton; Ryerson's President, Dr. Brian Segal; The Hon, Gregory Sorbara, Minister of Colleges and Universities; William Pattison, Chairman, Ryerson's Board of Governors; Lorne K. Lodge, IBM Canada Ltd.; Robert Ferchat, President, Northern Telecom Ltd. and Flora MacDonald, Minister of Employment and Immigration. Included is a picture of the ASEA 1000 Robot (a six-axis universal assembly robot). Hungarian visitors to CATE - Nov. 13/87.

Academic Computing Centre and Interior Design Building (opening)

Premier William Davis officially opened the Academic Computing Information Center and Interior Design. Oct 18/83. In attendance was Brian Segal, Dr. Bette Stephenson and B. Pattison. Also a photo of the plaque commemorating the official opening by William G. Davis, Premier of Ontario, located outside the Computing Information Centre, West Kerr Hall basement.

Architecture Building (720 King St. W.) and Classroom photographic images

The file contains photographic images divided into separate files :
A. 1977 - The "Annex" Architecture building in flames and the fire aftermath, including the drying of books and journals.
B. 1977-1978 - School of Architecture at 720 King St. W. with faculty and students in process of architectural design (1977) ; official opening (1978) ; student projects.
C. 1973, 1982 - Student award winners.
D. 1981 - Official opening of the Hester How Day Care Centre at Toronto's City Hall with Brian Segal (University President), Paul Godfrey (Metro Chairman), and Arthur (Art) Eggleton (Toronto Mayor). The playground equipment was designed and constructed by TMU (formerly Ryerson) first year Architecture students.

Bicentennial Display

Bicentennial celebration (1984), the Archives display and the model of the Normal School. The Normal School model was built to a one inch to eight feet scale and measures approximately five feet square. It was constructed over a period of nearly four months by students Edward Nicolucci, Richard Zoltek and Robert Smith, under the supervision of Professor Bob Greenberg, of the Architecture Department.
