Portrait of Richard Gordineer

Item is a cream card with photograph of a well dressed black man. On verso, a long text in black letterpress followed by a purple stamp at the bottom reading "C.A. Stacey, Artist./ Over 56 Main Street,/ Medina, New York." The text is a brief biography of Richard Gordineer, a slave born to a Mohawk Dutchman and a black woman, who was freed in 1825 along with all the slaves in New York state. He was an excellent baker, and was regularly employed as a whitewasher until he lost all his savings in 1862. Gordineer died on December 11, 1884.

Item is a photographic enlarger consisting of nine parts; a metal base, two shafts, one bellows/negative holder assembly with red filter, lens assembly, lamp with cord, and three cardbooard negative guides. Cast into the vertical assembly are the words: "Fotolarger, Testrite, N.Y." On the negative holder, there is a metal plate printed with the CSA logo, and "Fotolarger, use #211 lamp 75 W 110-115 V, Testrite Instrument Co., Inc., New York, N. Y. -- made in U.S.A."

Tru-Vue viewer

Binocular viewer is brown plastic, with black metal slide at the bottom for reel advancement. The eye pieces are fitted with transparent lenses for viewing images against translucent plastic backs--these allow ambient light to illuminate the images from behind. Molded into the body of the viewer is "TRU-VUE, ROCK ISLAND ILL, MADE IN U.S.A., U.S. PAT. 90564", and "INSERT FILM THIS END" (left side). The two-piece cardboard box has a silver top printed with the Tru-Vue logo in black, and a black bottom printed with "Tru-Vue Inc., Pictures With Depth, Rock Island, Illinois, printed and made in U.S.A." in silver.

Photographs are mostly family snapshots, on the beach, at home, having a picnic and by the lake; some include domestic animals. Some photographs taken Ottawa, and Niagara Falls, and at Balboa Island, California, among other destinations.

Photo stores include Thompson's Camera and Art Store.
Date on the back of a loose photograph says "Apr. / 30".

Item is a cream cabinet card with scalloped, gold-leafed edges and gold letterpress at bottom, "Goodwin/ EXTRA FINISH/ SYRACUSE, N.Y." Photograph is a full length portrait of a young boy, probably about 5 years old, wearing a lace shirt with dark cuffs and a dark ascot tie, trousers cut off at the knee, and holding a stick in one hand and a hat in another. He sits on the edge of a stone pillar with a background of abstracted leaves for a backdrop. On verso, an etching of a waterfall with the text "Goodwin./ 314 SO SALINA ST/ ART Photography./ INSTANTANEOUS PROCESS". At the top edge, handwritten in ink, "Georgia Wilson".
