Journalism magazines

Sub-series consists of magazines produced by the Journalism program: The Ryerson Magazine, Images, The Magazine, and The Ryerson Review of Journalism which went online in December 1997.
Also included is one ticket to the 30th anniversary celebration of The Ryerson Review of Journalism.

Reference file photographs

Journalism and Printing Management graduation composites

Photographs include graduation composites from 1958, 1959, and 4 copies of the 1964 composite. The 1964 composite shows graduates from the Printing Management program, whereas in 1958 and 1959 the composite shows graduates from both programs.

Ryersonian assignment photographs

Because the School of Journalism no longer maintains a photo file "morgue" from which the Archives periodically received material, a short-term arrangement was reached whereby the Archives identifies selected RYERSONIAN photographs to be reproduced by the School of Journalism for the Archives Collection.
These copy prints, along with photocopies of the relevant printed RYERSONIAN photographs, are arranged in the Collection by academic year under the one sub-series number.

UDO Award

This award is designed to recognize noteworthy contributions to the world of journalism by individuals outside the Ryerson community and nominations may be submitted by any full-time faculty member.

Canadian Journalism School Teachers : Ian Hamilton Address

An address delivered to the annual meeting of Canadian Journalism School Teachers by Ian Hamilton, a third year Ryerson journalism student. The title of the address is "On Future Journalism and How We Should Relate To It.".
Included with this document is a photo print of Ian Hamilton which was published in the March 20, 1970 issue of the Ryersonian, to accompany the news report about his address.

Three white ceramic coffee mugs with blue script. "The Ryersonian", "The BIG FOUR-OH 1948-1988 THE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM" is printed on one side like the masthead of the newspapers.

Atkinson Lectures - textual records

File contains textual related to the School of Journalism's Atkinson Lecture series. Included are transcripts of the lectures, invitations, one photograph of lecturer Denis Cecil Hills, correspondence, press releases, and flyers about the events.

Videotapes: Ryewitness News

A collection, on videotape, of 15-minute annual compilations of scenes of Broadcast Journalism students at work. Includes mainly bloopers, brief interviews with students and faculty and general shots of the Ryerson Campus.

Report Of Inquiry Into The Journalism Department

2 copies of "The Report of an Inquiry into the Department of Journalism at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute" September 1, 1970. This report was generated by the Department of Journalism at the request of the Office of the President (Mr. Donald L. Mordell).

Assignment photographs

Series consists of 7,278 photographic negatives created by Ryerson staff and students in the 1950's and 1960's. The photographs were taken for use in the student newspaper "The Ryersonian", the academic course calendar, the yearbook, and other school publications. The negatives are arranged according to subject.
Contact prints for the majority of the collection are available for viewing in our reading room. The negatives are in the process of being scanned.

Ryerson Review of Journalism

Started in the Spring of 1984 as a yearly publication by the School of Journalism, it became a twice yearly publication in 1995 with Spring and Summer editions. In 2011 it switched to summer and winter editions. In 2013 the RRJ began publishing only one edition again. The editors of the journal are all Ryerson Students.

Atkinson Lecture Series materials

The Atkinson Lecture series , established in 1974, came from a $50,000 grant obtained by Doug MacFarlane, then chairperson of the Journalism Department, from the Atkinson Foundation. The Atkinson Foundation was established to commemorate the late Joseph E. Atkinson, publisher of The Star from 1899-1948. The lecture series was intended to bring journalists to Ryerson to examine the role and relationships of media in today's society. The series, initially held twice a year, had its first lecture December 4, 1974.
Series contains materials created in relation to the lecture series. Included are posters, correspondence, and taped recordings of the lectures.
