History
Jacques Hébert was born in Montreal, Quebec June 21, 1923. He began attending Saint Dunstan's University in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island at age 16. He served as a journalist for the newspaper Le Devoir from 1951 to 1953. In 1954 he founded the weekly newspaper VRAI, acting as its published from 1954-1958. In 1958 he founded Éditions de l’Homme and Éditions du Jour in 1961.
In 1971, Hébert founded Canada World Youth, an organization that expands "the role of youth in developing their communities and promoting world peace". In 1978 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. He was appointed to the Senate on April 20, 1983, representing the senatorial division of Wellington, Quebec, and retired at the mandatory age of 75 in 1998. From 1991 to 1993 he was the Opposition Whip in the Senate and from 1993 to 1998 he was the Government Whip in the Senate. He received an honourary doctorate from Ryerson in 1997, and one from the University of Prince Edward Island in 2004. Jacques Hebert died December 6, 2007.
