Biographical history
William Lees operated a photography studio that was located in Portobello, Scotland with family members T. Lees and John Lees. The W. Lees studio was known for its creative studios sets and backdrops. William opened his first studio in 1892 at 22 Bath Street, and moved to 23 Bath Street in 1898. This studio remained open until 1914. Meanwhile, Lees also operated studios at 29 Promenade (1900-1902), 23c Bath Street (1905-1919), 24 Bath Street (1906), and 14 Bath Street (1910-1925), among others.

Item consists of a brown coloured cabinet with a cream coloured verso. Adhered to the recto is an image of a man, woman, and two young girls sitting in a cardboard prop of a late nineteenth-century automobile. An older woman leans against the hood of the vehicle. All are wearing hats. The backdrop to this studio setting features a landscape. Recto reads: "W. Lees / PHOTOGRAPHER (left) / 23 BATH ST. / PORTOBELLO. (right)" and the verso has "7.00" inscribed with graphite.
