MAY/1988: As the result of the assault on a female staff member in a Podium area washroom (in April) and other incidents of assault and indecent around this time, theJoint Occupational Health and Safety Committee and Advisory Committee on Employment and Educational Equity recommend to the Vice Presidents that an audit of security operations be undertaken. (Sosa Memo to Ryerson Community, 6May88) MAY/1988: Rick Peach is appointed Acting Manager, Ryerson Security. This is an interim measure (until September 30) "in order that we have on campus a responsibility centre dedicated exclusively to security". (Forum, 3Jun88) MAY/1988: The Security Steering Committee is formed. It reports to President Brian Segal and is chaired by Ingrid Bryan, Dean of Arts. AUGUST/1988: Rick Peach is appointed Manager, Security. DECEMBER/1988: The Security Advisory Committee submits its report. MARCH/1989: President Terry Grier responds to report with announcement of three-year plan (adding $600,000 and raising security bidget to $1.3 million). Changes for 1989-1990 fiscal year include: the hiring of crime prevention officer; the establishment of assault and harassment centre; the move of the reporting line for security services from Physical Resources Department to a more appropriate responsibility centre; and a photo identification program. MAY/1989: Arnice Cadieux, Director of Community Relations, assumes additional responsibilities as Director of Campus Safety and Security, effective May 8. NOVEMBER/1989: John Mihalic is appointed Program Co-ordinator, Campus Safety and Security. His duties will involve: policy analysis, liaison with the Ryerson Community and the training of security staff. SEPTEMBER/1990: Professor Jean Golden of the Sociology Department accepts a three-year secondment (effective September 1) as Director of Campus Safety and Security. She replaces Arnice Cadieux. One of her priorities is the staffing of an office of Harassment Prevention Services, within Safety and Security. AUGUST/1993: Janet Mays assumes the position of Acting Director, Campus Safety and Security. JULY/1994: Janet Mays is appointed Director of the newly designated Department of Equity, Harassment and Safety Services. She reports to the Vice President, Faculty and Staff Affairs. The Department's areas of responsibility include: the Crime Prevention Office; Employment and Educational Equity (including Ethno-Racial Issues); the Harassment Prevention Office; the Office of Occupational Health and Safety; and the Security Force. 1994-1995: The Ryerson internal telephone directory lists the department as Campus Equity, Harassment and Safety Services. 1996-1997: The Ryerson internal telephone directory includes "Work and Family Initiatives" as one of the responsibilities of Campus Equity, Harassment and Safety Services. SUMMER/2001: It is announced that Janet Mays has officially resigned her position. Issues of safety and harassment are referred to Lawrence Robinson, head of security and Ann Whiteside of Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Services. (Eyeopener 12Sep01) JULY/2002: Effective July 1, Julia Lewis ia apppointed Assistant Director, Centre for Environmental Health, Safety and Security Management. Her new responsibilities include "the day to day administration and management of Security Services, through the Manager of Safety and Security and the general security force at Ryerson University." (Linda Grayson, Jul02). According to Linda Grayson, the position does not include responsibility for Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Services, which will continue to report to the Vice President Administration and Student Affairs - presumably since the departure of Janet Mays.
