Series contains examples of tintypes, collected from various sources.
Tintypes, sometimes referred to as ferrotypes or melainotypes, are direct positive images created with sensitized collodion on a metal (iron) surface that has been coated with lacquer or enamel. While the process is similar to the ambrotype in that it is essentially an underexposed negative image, the tintype does not need to be mounted with a dark backing to view the image, as the dark coating creates the positive image.

Canadian Kodak Ltd., which became Kodak Canada Inc. in 1979, manufactured photographic films, papers and equipment for over a century in Toronto, Ontario. The company formed the Canadian branch of the successful Eastman Kodak Company, and officially opened its doors in 1900 at 41 Colborne Street under the direction of John G. Palmer. The company expanded and moved to 588 King Street West in 1908, but already plans were underway for an expansive complex to the north of the city. In 1912, Canadian Kodak purchased 25 acres of farmland near Weston Road and Eglinton Avenue to build a major manufacturing facility known as Kodak Heights. By 1925, there were over 900 employees working in seven buildings at Kodak Heights. Over the years, the company earned a reputation for having a cooperative and supportive relationship with its employees, adopting many of the successful practices in place at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York. In 1940, an Employee's Building was constructed to accommodate the activities of the flourishing Recreation Club, the Department Mangers' Club, and the Kodak Heights Camera Club. During the 1990s, the rise of digital media began to have a serious impact on manufacturing programs at Kodak facilities around the world, causing the Eastman Kodak Company to reduce its production of traditional print photography by one third globally. The company chose to focus on digital products, which did not require the extensive facilities used in the production of traditional photographic materials. On December 9, 2004, Kodak Canada Ltd. informed its employees that manufacturing operations in traditional film products would cease entirely at Kodak Heights. The company's facility faced the same fate as many of its foreign counterparts in England, Australia and France, being completely abandoned and demolished shortly after closure in 2005. Kodak Canada still maintains a sales and support office in downtown Toronto, while the manufacture of traditional photographic chemistry has returned to Rochester.

The Polaroid Corporation was founded by Edwin H. Land. He registered his first patent (for a synthetic polarzier) in 1926, and created the Land-Wheelwright Laboratories in Boston with George Wheelwright III in 1932. The company initially produced glasses with polarized lenses, including 3D glasses and Army issue goggles. The inspiration for instant photographs reportedly came to Land from his daughter, who while on vacation in 1943, asked her father why she couldn't see a photo he had just taken right away. By 1947, the first demonstration model of the instant camera was complete. The first Land instant cameras (Model 95) were sold in 1948, and by 1956 the one millionth Polaroid Camera was manufactured in Cambridge Massachusetts. Colour instant film was introduced by the company in 1963, and soon after automatic film pack cameras were developed. Over the years, the company had many spokespeople for its products, including Lawrence Olivier, Steve Allen, the Muppets, James Garner, Mariette Hartley, Sinbad and the Spice Girls. The original Polaroid company filed for bankruptcy in 2001, and by 2002 it was a new private company held by Bank One.

Kilburn Brothers is a American and Canadian photography studio and publisher founded by Benjamin and Edward Kilburn in 1865. In 1867 the company published a series of 30 views of Montreal and Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Benjamin made all the negatives for the company until 1867. In 1877 Edward Kilburn retired leaving Benjamin to run the company until 1909.
James M. Davis was born in North Carolina in 1853, and began selling stereocards for the Kilburn Brothers 1872, prior to finishing school. He acted as distributor for the stereograph company, as well as photographer. The Kilburn Company closed in 1909, selling it's negatives to the Keystone View Company. Davis was also an Underwood & Underwood salesman and began selling H.C. White made stereoscopes for resale.

Underwood and Underwood was established in 1882 by Bert and Elmer Underwood in Ottawa, Kansas. Originally they distributed stereographs made by eastern photographers in the Western United States. In 1884, they had expanded their franchise across North America and by 1889 opened offices in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Liverpool, England. By 1890 Underwood & Underwood began publishing original stereographs taken by Bert Underwood. Underwood & Underwood was considered one of the most successful stereoscope publishers in North America in 1901.Underwood & Underwood began producing 25,000 views per day and 300,000 stereoscopes annually. It is suggested that in the earlier years of the company, Underwood & Underwood used H.C. White Company’s stereoscope model until developing their own. The principle stereoscope design by Underwood & Underwood included aluminum hoods, cardholders, and a folding handle. An easy identifiable feature of Underwood & Underwood stereoscopes is the friction joint built to fold the handle.
In 1910 the firm began specialising in news photography, ultimately stopping production of stereographs in 1920. Between 1912 and 1925 the company would sell the entirety of their glass stereo collection to competitor Keystone View Co.. By 1925 both brothers retired, leading to the reorganization of the company into four independent organisations all staying beneath the title of "Underwood & Underwood." These four branches included Underwood & Underwood Illustration Studios of New York, Chicago and Detroit; Underwood & Underwood Portraits, Inc., New York, Philadelphia and Cleveland; Underwood & Underwood, Washington and Chicago; Underwood & Underwood News Photos, Inc., New York.

Founded in 1802 on Silver Street in Waterbury, CT, Abel Porter & Co. began by producing brass and copper items and sewing hardware. Under the new partnership of Leavenworth, Hayden & Scovill of 1811, the company continued to produce brass buttons, including a military contract to produce civil war artillery buttons.
Having been already set up for the production of metal items, J.M.L Scovill and W.H. Scovill began manufacturing silvered plates in 1839, shortly after the presentation of Daguerreotype photography. In about a year, Scovill plates were of equal quality to plates manufactured in Paris.
The Scovills became notable suppliers of photographic supplies after opening a New York storefront in 1846, which carried a full line of cameras, photographic equipment and supplies.
The Scovill company continued to grow; it was incorporated as Scovill Manufacturing Company in 1850 and acquired the American Optical Company in 1867. This broadened their manufacturing line to include the box cameras and stereoscopes produced by American Optical.
Some organizational change followed when, in 1889, an officer took over the company, changing the name to Scovill & Adam's. The company's name changed again, to The Scovill & Anthony Company, when it merged with the E. & H.T. Anthony Company in 1902.
In 1907, this handle was abbreviated to "ANSCO". The company continued to produce photographic equipment under that brand name until 1928, when they merged with the German manufacturer, Agfa.

One cardboard box meant for holding dry plates manufactured by the Canadian Kodak Co. Originally came with instructions inside the package. Contained one dozen plates measuring 4 x 5 inches.
The Gelatin or Dry Plate photographic process was invented in 1871 by Dr. Richard L Maddox. This involved the coating of glass photographic plates with a light sensitive gelatin emulsion and allowing them to dry prior to use. This made for a much more practical process than the wet plate process as the plate could be transported, exposed and then processed at a later date rather than having to coat, expose and process the plate in one sitting. The gelatin dry plate process technique was developed and eventually led to the roll film process.

One cardboard box meant for holding dry plates manufactured by the Stanley Co. Box contained one dozen plates and ranked a No. 50 on the sensitometer. Box bears a logo with a man on a horse saying "On Stanley, On."
F.E. Stanley developed his own dry plate formulation and then eventually began selling plates to other photographers. The venture proved so successful that he and his twin brother, F. O. Stanley, became partners in the Stanley Dry Plate Company in 1884. Their coating machine, patented in 1886, accelerated the dry plate process, coating plates at a speed of one plate per second. The twins ultimately sold the Stanley Dry Plate Company to George Eastman of Eastman Kodak, who used the Stanley innovation to build his photography empire.

Carlo Poni was an Italian photographer and optician. He was born in Switzerland in approximately 1823 before moving to France. During his time in Paris, France he worked with the optician, Chauchois, studying photography. In ca. 1852 he moved to Venice Italy where he photographed and published an album of 160 photographs of Venetian architecture between 1854 and 1855, which were sold in his shop. He also sold a variety of optical equipment and reproductions of works of art, as well as inventing optical instruments designed to allow a greater experience of three-dimensionality in two-dimensional photographs, including the megalethoscope, the graphoscope, and the alethoscope, which was variously called a dioramascope or pontioscope. From 1860 to 1865 Ponti photographed Rome, Italy. Between 1857 and 1868 Ponti published and edited Carlo Naya's photographs, until a dispute which ended their relationship. In 1866 Ponti was also appointed optician and photographer to the King of Italy. Ponti died blind at age seventy-three.

Series contains wet plate collodion negatives, a process usually credited to William Scott Archer , in wide use between 1851 and 1885. The process uses light-sensitive silver halides in collodion on a glass base and the negatives needed to be exposed while still wet. Positive prints of wet plate negatives were usually made using the albumen silver process. The process was superseded by the more convenient dry plate process.
From the Wilhelm E. Nassau/Wilfrid Laurier University donation, accession number 2011.018. Moved to the Historical Photographic Processes collection in 2017.

"Canadian War Ration Books." Retrieved from http://www.genealogytoday.com/ca/canadian-ration-books.html
Shortly after the commencement of World War Two, rationing was introduced in Canada (on January 24, 1942), to limit the use of imported food and to free up supplies for the military and their allies.
Each household filled out an application and ration books were mailed out on Monday 31 August 1942. Every family member was issued a ration book. Six different series of books were issued, however, only book one had serial numbers printed on them. Subsequent books had the same serial number, but handwritten.
Each book contained coupons for tea, coffee, and sugar, along with spares in the event that other products would be rationed.
The last Canadian ration book was issued in September 1946, with rationing formally concluding in 1947.
Published
One green ration book (Book 2, belonged to John Albert Elgie) and one brown ration book (Book 4, belonged to Maggie Elgie). Each contains stamps for rationed items during World War Two. Book 2 describes items as Spare A, B or G, but in Book 4 these classes were replaced by descriptions of the actual items ie. Meat, Tea or Coffee. Some stamps are missing from each.
