This file contains one copy of the Rowsell's Toronto City Directory (1850-1851). Also included are two articles, photocopies of selected pages, and the Library Circulation book card set in place when the book was removed from the shelf.
No further accruals are expected.
The directory belonged to noted architect, William Thomas, who built Oakham House as his residence in 1848. William Thomas signed the inside of the directory. In June 1965, 117 years later, during a renovation of the building, then called Kerr Hall, it was found under the floorboards of the faculty washroom by a workman re-modelling to enlarge the living quarters of the warden. The senior don, Ted Brock, rescued the directory from the garbage and eventually donated it to the Library's rare book collection. In 1988, the Library donated it to the Ryerson Archives.
Closed. The records city directory is not accessible for conservation reasons. Other items in the file are accessible.

Two framed renderings by William Thomas, noted architect who designed and lived in Oakham House. One rendering is of the steeple of St. Michael's Cathedral (Thomas is credited with the main design of the Cathedral although the final design of the steeple is attributed to another architect). The other is a rendering from a book entitled, "Designs for Monuments and Chimney Pieces by William Thomas", published by John Weale of London, England. Both renderings are reproductions of originals held in the Baldwin Room of the Toronto Reference Library.

Photographs, invitation, newsletter report, videotape relating to the unveiling of a special bronze plaque next to the gravestone of William Thomas in St. James Cemetery in Toronto, and the subsequent reception at Oakham House. The plaque contains the transcribed text from the gravestone, which had become illegible over time but was available through cemetery records. The gravestone itself was partially restored. Funds for both the plaque and the restoration were provided by various heritage groups under the coordination of Mr. Stephen Otto. After the unveiling ceremony, the attendees (numbering about 25 and including relatives of William Thomas) were invited to Oakham House for refreshments, including a birthday cake in honor of the anniversary of Thomas' 200th birthday.

No further accruals are expected.
Two cast iron Chesapeake Bay Retriever dogs, one male one female, were commissioned by architect William Thomas and cast at the iron works Toronto company, Phoenix Foundry, owned by John McGee. Originally they were of a red hue and were designed to hitch horses in front of Thomas's home, Oakham House (1848), on Church Street at Gould Street, Toronto.
Thomas lived in the house until his death in 1860 when the aforementioned John McGee purchased it. After a few more owners, including it being run as a boarding house, the house and the dogs were sold in 1899 to the Society for Working Boys - a charity for disadvantaged boys. With an addition built to the back of the original house, the building was run as the Working Boys' Home for almost 60 years until Ryerson Institute of Technology acquired it in late 1958. However, the dogs had moved with the boys to their new location on Montcrest Blvd and it was not until 1982 that Ryerson Polytechnical Institute was able to claim the dogs and move them back to Oakham House where they belonged. The Toronto Historical Board wanted the pair to be mounted in their historical place in the front of the house; however, in the interest of protecting them, the dogs resided inside until the University Archives adopted them in 2010.
