Started in the Spring of 1984 as a yearly publication by the School of Journalism, it became a twice yearly publication in 1995 with Spring and Summer editions. In 2011 it switched to summer and winter editions. In 2013 the RRJ began publishing only one edition again. The editors of the journal are all Ryerson Students.
In May of 2021 a renaming committee recommended that the names of both the Ryersonian and the Ryerson Review of Journalism should be changed. The School Council unanimously approved these motions. Ryerson was removed from the name of the magazine. The Spring 2022 edition was the first with the new name "Review of Journalism".
These changes are in line with the University's announcement of its intention to change the name of the University, which occurred in Spring 2022 - Toronto Metropolitan University. This change was one of 22 recommendations put forward by the Standing Strong Taskforce whose mandate was to to develop principles to guide commemoration at the university and to respond to the history and legacy of Egerton Ryerson within the context of the university’s values.

In July, the School reached out to community members with a renaming form, encouraging them to submit their ideas for new names. In September 2021 the name was changed on "On the Record".
These changes are in line with the University's announcement of its intention to change the name of the University in time for the 2022-2023 school year. The Atkinson Lecture series , established in 1974, came from a $50,000 grant obtained by Doug MacFarlane, then chairperson of the Journalism Department, from the Atkinson Foundation. The Atkinson Foundation was established to commemorate the late Joseph E. Atkinson, publisher of The Star from 1899-1948. The lecture series was intended to bring journalists to Ryerson to examine the role and relationships of media in today's society. The series, initially held twice a year, had its first lecture December 4, 1974.

1990 : with the disbandment of the Learning Resources Centre on July 1, the Media Centre reported to the Vice-President Finance and Administration. On August 1, the Media Centre joined the Department of Development, Alumni and Community Relations. John Kentner, Manager of the Centre, reported to Ian Marlatt, Director, Creative Services.
In early 1996, with a realignment of responsibilities in the Development, Alumni and Community Relations area, the graphic and photography functions of the Media Centre were formally consolidated within the Community Relations unit, whereas the remaining audio-visual equipment functions were integrated into Computing and Communications Services (CCS). In December of 1996, the Development, Alumni and Community Relations Department changed its name to the University Advancement Office. Plans were underway to change the name of the Media Centre to Presentation Technology and to renovate and reorganize the physical area currently occupied by the Media Centre in the basement of the Learning Resources Centre.
CCS renamed the Media Centre to Media Services and transferred staff members the newly formed DMP (c.1996). The Digital Media Projects Office began as a joint initiative between Rogers Communication Centre (RCC) and Computing and Communications Services (CCS) to promote digital media usage to faculty for use in classroom teaching. It was originally located within the RCC. Around 2000, the RCC withdrew from the joint DMP initiative and CCS became the sole supporter. At this point, the DMP was moved from the RCC to it's current location in CCS within the Library Building.

The Journalism School stopped maintaining a file for previously used photographs, referred to a a "morgue" file, from which they donated photographs to the Archives for permanent preservation. To continue receiving these records, a short-term arrangement was reached whereby the Archives identified from the newspaper, The Ryersonian, which photographs were desirable, photocopied them and Journalism located the photographs, made copy prints, and sent them to the Archives. The transfer arrangement ended in 1999.
These copy prints are in the file with along with photocopies of the relevant RYERSONIAN article photographs,
Photographs and their accompanying RYERSONIAN newspaper photograph are in date order staring from Septermber 1996.
