A note on language in archival descriptions

Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries Archives & Special Collections consists of historical items and records that may contain offensive, outdated language in their titles and descriptions, and/or may depict individuals or groups, particularly those who are marginalized, in a negative way. Maintaining these records, and making them available to students, researchers, and the public, is important to help to understand the historic and continued burden marginalized communities face.

We are actively working on updating archival descriptions to name instances of discrimination, contextualize records and use vocabulary that respects the people and events represented in the material. More information about this initiative can be found on our website.

The Archives serves as the institutional memory of the Toronto Metropolitan University community. The Archives appraises, preserves, and makes accessible a broad range of primary source materials which provide administrative, academic, fiscal, legal, social, and cultural record of Toronto Metropolitan University.

Special Collections was established to help support the learning and teaching needs and facilitate the scholarly, research and creative activities of the Toronto Metropolitan University community by acquiring and preserving photography, film and cultural history objects. We have a particular responsibility to help students and staff gain access to objects in niche subject areas and aid them in the interpretation of those objects.
